Would you spend more on a guaranteed high CPU overclock?

I wonder what they do with all the chips that they break the seal on and don't get over 5GHz..

Necessary sacrifices?

Blood for the Blood God!
Skulls for the Skull Throne!

Perhaps that explains that completely mental price premium?

Perhaps they go into a pre-build with a 4.8GHz clock? Hard to know. They could send them all to me if they like.

i think its a disgrace that you have to pay extra for someone to sort out the thermals, how intel get away with it i dont understand. if it was amd doing it everyone would be up and arms but paying 350 for a chip that has the cheapest of tim on it is just robbery

its great that ocuk are offering the service with a guarantee of oc, you get a bin and delid but just shouldnt have to be done on such a chip

Hey Tom! You should defenetly try to have a sample from these chips and overclock the hell out of it. The i7s are out of my reach, but because of that I find it so amusing to someone else push it to limits. Then I start drooling for a system lick this. But you should defenetly do a "Extreme i7 Overclocks!" video, I would defenetly watch it.

Apparently all the chips that are cherry picked from are not retail in the first place.
All the "failed" chips will go to their pre-built systems, so im guessing not all is wasted and thrown in bin

So they guarantee only for non avx applications ! So does this mean if an AVX application is launched then the cpu risks freezing the system ?? This is not stable in my opinion and is a rip off !! They should be rating these cpus for avx stable and not most other application stable.

AVX can be a problems for some CPU overclocks, though some BIOS' now can automatically downclock a CPU when in AVX mode.

For example run at 5GHz and then 4.8 when AVX modes are used.

There is a web site that sells cherry picked CPUs. I wonder if OC buy in bulk from them or similar, delid to drop temps and then add a little extra cost as a mark up.

They do sell bundles that run at 4.8GHz, so that must be where the sub-par samples go.

All of OCUK's pre-builds come de-lidded as far as I am aware.

Negatory, sacrifices made in offer to the Blood God.

Nah they would buy them in trays and get 8 Pack to bin them. That's his job pretty much. Once binned they probably delid the best, so you are getting something for that extra money.

"Golden" CPUs have always been worth lots of money. I think OCUK have just been thinking of a way to benefit from it.

Why is AVX so hard on CPUs?

AVX handles arrays of up to 8 32bit floating point numbers. Improving the execution time of floating point arithmetic. Traditionally floating point operations are expensive and fixed precision is used instead.

Simply put it speeds up what are otherwise some of the slowest mathematical operations. Because it's not fixed precision it's also prone to errors in rounding so I would say when the CPU is overclocked they can't guarantee that AVX will return results that are as accurate as they ought to be

How? They have a monopoly on the high performance CPUs. That's how.
