Overclock Vs Stock

Froger

sup peoples (sorry just felt like saying that Hi for the more mature people)
my friend is looking at buying a new PC im trying to help, but we are wondering about whether to get a 3570k and overclock it or save money (which he is short on) (we are already pushing the budget by getting an i5) or get a 3470.
he will be doing gaming and lots of video editing as he is doing film studies at A level so will probably need faster but how much of a difference would a 700mhz overclock make in like render times for 720p video, is it substantial enough to be worth waiting a while, he is not 100% tech savy and not knowing about overclocking or differences between K and no K etc...
so what would you sugest
his rig will be:
MOBO: MSI Z77A-G43
CPU: i5 3470 or 3570K
NO SSD just HDD
corsair vengance 8Gb 1600mhz

If you're considering waiting a while to save for the 3570K you may as well wait a bit longer and get the i7 3770K. If he's doing video editing he will see a huge benefit going to the due to the hyper threading. That being said, I'd say yes, its definitely worth getting the 3570K over the 3470.

how much will a 700mhz overclock at 1.2v ish how much will that degrade the life of a 3570k, will it last maybe 3+ years at 4.2ghz or so?

At that price point i would also take the 8350 or 8320 in consideration. They lack in single threaded performance, but they outperform a 3570k in higly multithreaded applications, like video encoding and stuff.

yeah, but wanna stick with intel, he has an overall budget of 250 ish, and we already got the ram which was 50 and the mobo is about 95
sorry i put down the wrong mobo at the start it is actually a MSI Z77A-G43

Just saying :)

I didnt read the wole first post though. But still if he is doing a lot of video editing and encoding, more cores = more fun. Maybe second hand 3770k or without k ?

Yes, without a doubt. Thats a very mild overclock and will hardly degrade it anymore than if left at stock.

If you're not going for OC, a Z77 board is a bit overkill too (generally) and you can go for a B75 board (well I guess it depends on if he will be using onboard graphics or a graphics card)..

When looking for video editing you might also want to check out the Xeons: kinda like i7's (so with Hyper Threading) but without the onboard graphics (and unable to OC really) for ~i5 prices.

Firstly you can overclock a non K I5 or I7. Here is how to do it.

So please, please please please don't listen to the entire world when they say that you can only overclock a K version. What they really mean when they say that is that they simply didn't know the non Ks overclock too.

So that rules out B75 because I can unequivocally tell you that they do not allow you to overclock the enhanced turbo feature (my friend tried it on his MSI B75 a few days back).

The MSI G43 is pretty lame. I don't know how well they overclock or even if they overclock at all tbh. They probably do, but with the price of the G45 being so low you should have gone for that.

If he's video editing then I would strongly consider AMD. Do your homework and look up reviews where they actually tested things like that.

Xeons on Sandy and Ivy are exactly the same thing as the I5 and I7, though usually with a massive price tag.

I use a Xeon and it's basically clocked and specced out the same as a I5 2400, only it has the I7's cache and doesn't have an IGPU. Due to this it only pulls 80w max and temps never go over 49c under load.

Other than that though you're better off with the desktop part (unless you can get a Xeon cheaper than an I5 like I did) because they're only really meant to go in servers.
