OS X --- Whats the point??

Ok I had OSX (OSX86 :D ) installed on my rig for a while using it i came to the conclusion.

WTF is the point??

To open video files u need like a trillion plugins (even tho QT is meant to support MPEG4 -- it looks like only in MP4 containers with QT CCs)

To open videos fullscreen u need to BUY QT pro.

VLC DOESNT WORK!

there is 4 app suites to run == MS Office, CS2, CS3, Studio 8

and games have to be POSIX compilant and OpenGL

Seriously please help me what is the point ??? LINUX is MUCH MUCH better

You can play fullscreen using VLC.

I'm pretty sure Quicktime plays mpeg4 without any extra plugins at all

For windows file formats like wmv you can download Flip4Mac

In what way? I've had no problems with it at all.

Like linux, there are a few games that run on mac osx, altho a lot less than linux.

Also like linux, you can run windows games & apps using wine (Crossover, Cider & Darwine)

I find linux to be better in some respects, but there are some cool apps on OSX, It's easier & stuff just works.

I use linux (since 1998) also and it is brilliant. Games work, it's more customisable etc etc. But there are problems like hardware support. When I got my core2duo setup ubuntu/gentoo/suse/mandrake etc etc didn't work because of kernel problems with my PATA controller. My Creative USB soundcard doesn't work using ALSA.

OSX is my favourite OS also.

I have windows + linux themed the same as OSX as I find it a lot easier.

I don't think OSX is a waste of time, as if it was why would so many people be using it

open an XVID avi or @ least try to it wont work which is senseless as MP4 is open cross compatible standard it seems apple have went ont of their way to make it hard to play other MP4 standard videos ,either becuse they are in another container or use more features than apple MP4 (as Divx and Xvid do)

for Me Vlc doesnt play ANY Video it just crashes out throwing IO errors

Linux DX Games Support is Mediocre(cedega/wine) but cider/darwine is virtually nonexistant

Yes OS X is very easy to use and very stable but it turns a general purpose PC into a photoshop/dreamweaver/QT/FCP/Motion machine.

Linux HW suport does support most HW .. but you may need the latest Kernel (ie from kernel.org) which most Distros dont include ... COMPILE TIME

( this thread is leading to another thread where my points bias will appear -- the shd developers support linux or OS x poll/thread and this is where Obj C and Coaco could lead to OS X only apps where X/C++ Apps will allow both but not as pretty on OS X)

I guess I've never tried those type of vids :( but it does sound like the sort of thing apple would go out of their way to do.

What graphics drivers are u using on OSX?

Do you have QE/CI + OpenGL working

I have had cs:source running on my OSX install using crossover. FPS wasn't brilliant but it was playable and I thought it was quite good that it worked considering steam etc.

I didn't really bother trying any other games.

I agree, it does seem to be a general use type thing (browsing, emails, photo editing). I think that is the market they target.

With stuff like iLife being bundled with new macs etc :)

edit: I guess the main amount of revenue would be people/companies who want to run certain software like photoshop/aperture etc

I also don't think they are really fully commiting to gaming for whatever reasons atm, altho they are using gaming as a ploy to get more younger users.

Yer, I norm put on custom kernels after install anyway with different CFlags etc. But the install disks didn't work :(

Also the gentoo disk that did work was the latest and it removed my partition table for some reason :(

bah I miss my old stage1 install :(

I think some developers + companies will go for OS X for market share and also because mac users seem to be prepared to spend money more than linux users.

possibly u didnt save a compressed kernel ... or loaded your FS support as a module (as is default on menuconfig).

removed part table?? what ur FSTAB or GRUB /LILO conf ?

it could have been a MBR RW

I would Expect this also but i have worked (as the 'tech guy') in a few design houses im taling 40 - 50 macs running Everyting macromedia/ADobe has to offer as well as iLife (when it was paid for) and there wasnt a liscense anywhere. I do have a Cedega subs and personally i would pay for apps that just work (hah windows) with the money ive saved from running 90% FOSS soft

nope the actual partition table on the hdd, clearing the drive of partitions :( meaning I lost all of the data already on the hdd (my windows data etc)

The MPT!!?!? WTF u were playin with FDISK too much .. if u need to partition i suggest using BootitNextGeneration or the GParted Live Disk they are pretty GUI tools with ease of use

It was GParted on a gentoo live disk that did it :(

FDisk seems to work better :)

I re-partitioned it using FDisk after and it worked. I posted on gentoo to see if it was a bug aswell as the disk had only been released the day before.

I know there was problems with the early Gpart live disks (slow part detection) but i have never heard of this f*dup ness cld it be moved your rig with a crane (em coupling)

@chudley the Mac Os version 10 based on the Mach Microkernel/Bsd/Unix
