xp was good, vista was GASH and 7 fixed it all and then some.

vista was brilliant

I never thought I'd see the words "vista" and "brilliant" used in the same sentence.

XP (despite it's lacking firewall) was great, Vista was just a proper pain in the ass for most users (UAC, various bugs and glitches, compatibility issues, etc), Windows 7 is like if you were to fix all of the problems of Vista, combine it with stability and compatibility of XP, and then add on a large amount of other great features to make the end-user's life much easier. Not to mention the performance BOOSTS over Vista.

It seems like every Windows OS goes through this cycle though. For every Windows 98 (XP, 7), there is a Windows ME (Vista) around the corner, and vice versa. Makes me think that the new Windows 8 will be crap, and Windows 9 will be the next great OS.

You're forgetting Win2k! Win2k combined the performance of 98 with the stability of NT and in fact became the foundation for the bloated turd that was XP. I think that 7 is the only half decent OS they've made since Win2k SP4. If you've never used 2k, and can get drivers for it give it a shot. You'll be pleasantly suprised and notice there's no craptacular activation or bloat. I had a working system using under 40MB ram in vmware after disbling a few services, and it was still perfectly usable. Anyway this is going ridiculously OT..

OSX is great! I think Leopard and Snow Leopard are the best versions though. Tiger is usable but up to 10.3 I find it a bit gimmicky (got a copy of 10.2 and it's useless). You can use VMware fusion for near seamless compatibility with windows apps but keep a tab on the resource usage (menumeters is a great free add on for OSX) as you will be running a complete windows install on top of OSX.

Anyway, congrats on your new purchase

I'm sure you'll be more than happy with it!

thanks for all the comments

as i said, i found vista to be the best version of windows recently

my laptop, pc, and spare pc are all running vista stable, and quickly, then my MacBook Pro and my iMac will be running OSX, should be an interesting combination...

xp was a bit iffy, cos it needed a firewall etc...

and 7, i hate the stupid grouping of windows, the changing backgrounds every 5 mins or whatever it is, the themes, the too big menu bar, and the fact they moved ALL the settings from control panel to simple things, vista was the optimal layout for finding things imo.

i *think* vista was xp, improved.

but yeah, placing an order with apple is brilliant, you get your own personal advisor, ...i chose to do it through the 0% finance, so i have to wait for the forms to be emailed, then fill them in, send them back ....

and he keeps me updated from their end as to what happens and so on and so forth, its brilliant, its a better experience than ive ever had buying a computer, or anything else, with the only exception being a car...

Vista was not XP improved. Vista, like ME (multiple errors) was an abomination and M$ should have given 7 away by means of apology.

Without SP1 Vista could actually physically break hard drives. The indexing was f***ed, the copying was f***ed ETC ETC.

XP was 2000 with a pretty face, which was already a proven OS. Vista was far from that. It was a peetake on Mac OS and failed in the head.

i liked vista, with SP1 its a good OS

and its been the most stable version of windows i have ever used

more so than 7 ever has been for me

not to mention its easier to use than 7,

7 is the apple rip off with the way it bunches windows together

Hope you enjoy your new iMac

GTX 580 > 480

Win 7 > Vista

Both of them promised a lot and were crap and annoying and had issues then both got revamped and fixed and just work. Both vista and the 480 are blots on their respective histories. Most of your issues with widows 7 can be changed... So your issues aren't actually problems with the OS they're just the pretty stuff you can turn it off or mod it etc

but i have no issue with vista, there's always the 1 person who when somthing rubbish comes out, they find it perfect, and when somthing comes out to replace it that is suposadly better, they find it worse, i tend to be one of these people, i usually tend to stick by the underdog lol

I Find vista the best too, The main reason im not using 7 is because of compatibility. I really dont see what problems people can possibly have with vista except the UAC (that can be turned off) , I have not run in to any OS related problems after running vista for 3 years.

ive used vista since just after it came out, i have it on 3 computers, rock solid, stable, never ever had to reinstall it, its brilliant

but this is slightly off topic lol, and should maybe be kept for its own thread
