Opterons - To Stop Selling Retail??

Been reading a lot recently that Opteron CPU's are ear-marked by AMd to be supplied to system integrators only, meaning that in a very short space of time, shelves will not be re-stocked at e-tailors for this chip.

It's popping up all over the place now and the rumour is gathering some momentum - anyone confirm this?

In all fairness to the homeusers who have stumped up good money for other products - seems like the right thing to do (given the price gap and the immediate de-valuation of a64 cpu's overnight).

But then again I believe they should never have employed the strategy they did when it went skt939.

Part of me thinks that the 939 Opterons were an unofficial "thankyou" from AMD to the folk that have stuck by them- AMD have had a great year, and to have these appear at the end of the year seems to fit. Would have tied in better if it was the end of the financial year but I like the sound of my theory!

Im soo glad i managed to get a belter of a chip then if its true.

Ive heard the rumours too that the party has ended with these - after all they were basically giving FX57's away for £100-£180 depending on which chip you went for.

AMD rock!!!!!

Apparantly theres going to be a new revision(E4) of the lower end venice cores, such as the 3200 and 3500 which are supposed to be similar to the opterons, apparantly.

No idea if the rumour is true or not, like you guys I'm glad I got a decent one before they started getting poohey. :B

I don't think it'll be the end of the world if they all go to the OEM's, seems like single core will be going the way of the dodo sooner rather than later and the current dual core optys aren't significantly cheaper than the regular X2 counterparts and don't appear to be much better clockers if at all.

Mav's right though, it was a bit of a kick in the teeth to anyone that bought an A64 just before the Optys hit the shelves.:eh:

On the other hand if they do that then the only real winners will be the re-sale value of the decent opties will improve (so will normal a64 at the same time).

If this is tru I was one of the luckey ones then. I also got a golden Opteron :D 3.2 Ghz @ 1.45 voce only and 3.0 @ 1.4 vcore. The theore that it was a gifr for the ones sticking with AMD seems pretty tru to my ears :D

Thats impressive those ASRock dual motherboards really are a nice piece of work.

The company i worked for were one of the largest UK buyers fron AMD.

On several occasions i requested a replacement for a cpu that had been removed from sale for over 2 years and was still able to get one.

Question answered then i have heard the new chips do not overclock as well as the first batch but as long as you do get a replacement.

Thats the big thing innit - like the guys recently who have succerssfully destroyed their 3.9ghz FX57's - they can RMA but the unit they get back is not half the beast they had.

Shame ;)

Getting back on track it suprised me ti AMD so long to realise what a cock up they had made it aint as good as the FX but for the price who can blame people for buying them.

I just ordered a new Opteron 146. In case that my own 146 fails or burns upp and as an investment for the near future. I know that it will be a good stepping so I´m glad. So now I acualy wish they stop making them so the price on my opteron goes up :D

There's plenty of them gonna be available for a while yet, the new steppings seem to be doing 2.8 Ghz on air too so it's all good
