Opteron 146 to Opteron 165 - Worth It ?

Hey All,

As the title says I am thinking of upgrading my Opteron 146 which is a CABYE 0540 FPAW stepping and does 2.8ghz on stock volts since day one to a Opteron 165.

First of all, will I see much difference if I go from single to dual core and what are my chances of getting it to 2.8ghz like my current 146.

My pc is mainly used for gaming but I do a bit of encoding aswell.

Thanks, Sam

Going dual core really did make a difference for me, general speed obviously hardly increased but being able to start all my applications at once was great. Eg you would be able to do your encoding and decoding at once without the cpu breaking a sweat (no idea what else you do that would benefit lol) Plus Valve have got a dual-thread patch in the pipelines set for the next few weeks/months. As for the overclockability i have no idea as it will depend more on your Core and revision but digging around on XS's record threads should dig up some hints

Like Llwydb said look on XS for some steppings...but going from single core to dual core is a defo yes in performance terms

The single core to dual core move is great, no matter what you do. It just lets you get that many more things done at once, when you really need it done. You may not be able to clock up as high as you've got your 146 but you should be able to get darn close. I would say that 2.6 should be an easy target, and then with enough tweaking and a good stepping you should be able to tap on the 2.8-3ghz door.

My vote is for upgrade :)

Dual core roxx your soxx. It's quite nice to have the system stay responsive when I've got ~15 programs open doing school stuff. Obviously it won't help single threaded things much but I think you would be better off overall even if you dropped a few MHz (which you probably won't have to do tho) :)
