G'day, thinking about an upgrade and found this on Ebay. What do you guys think?

It's about the right price or what I'm willing to part with cash wise but I'm wondering

if I should spend the money on a 6800gt instead.

Ebay Upgrade option

I'm thinking this should last awhile, but I'm a bit worried about AMD changing thier

socket format again.

Whadoyareckon???

That's a pretty good price for what ur getting there... What are you running now? Pending what u have now the 6800GT might be your better bet.

But all in all, that's a pretty good deal for the cpu, mobo, and ram. The proc has a nice core and will overclock nicely, the board is decent and will also help you get a bit out of the chip. The ram is probably bargain bin crap that won't oc but maybe 10mhz but that can easily be replaced down the road if you want to tear into your proccies full potential.

id advise against an ebay upgrade kit like that, buy it seperately. those ebay guys are making a profit somewhr so you are the one paying extra. also i recommend a switch to pci-express and that offers you plenty of upgradability for the future, even if it means you start off with a crappy gfx card like a 6200 (like i did before my 6600gt)

Thanks Fragtek, I was thinking it was a decent deal and I reckon your right about the RAM. It'll be easy and cheap enough to upgrade later.

Currently I'm running a 9600se graphics card through a Abit KD7A mobo with 1 gig of DDR400 generic Poo. This board Sucks 'cause I can't lock the AGP ratio to get decent clocks. I've only been able to get it up to about 2.1 g/hz and barely noticed the difference. do you think i'll be able to sell this mobo cpu combo or would I be better off using it as a backup system/firewall etc

Cheers Mate,

Mick

Sorry guys CPU is Barton 2600+

AXP's are nice proccies for sure... If it's still running well for you I might suggest getting the video card, and possibly a new mobo and ram.

@Dave: Of course they're making a profit somewhere, or else they wouldnt be selling it. Someones making a profit no matter where you buy your stuff, and eBay usually has some of the best prices you can find.

Capitalism Baby!!! LOL :)

Maybe I can find some nice Socialist out there who'll just upgrade my system for free

'cause they feel it'll help the state!!! ROFL :) :)

Thanks Frag

The trouble is - don't upgrade to something you know your going to want to change. I've done this countless times and wasted a helluva lot of money in the process.

Mind - that XP proc should be good for now. A 6800GT would be pretty sweet...but then do you want to get an A64 proc in the future?

Maybe you could get the 6800GT...then when you feel that you want to upgrade to 939 A64, you could get the ULi chipset board with AGP and full PCI-E...then you can upgrade the vid card as/when/if you need to :D

Good point! I just wonder if my processor will be to much of a bottleneck?

I reckon I'd be happy with that new cpu mobo combo for a while! :)

You mean vid card/mobo combo?

If you're gonna get a new CPU/motherboard then get an A64! :p

Um,Yeah... :) LOL Would the 2600+ hold back the new GPU enough to make me go out and buy the new mobo/cpu combo. Please say yes!!! I'm itchin' for it!!! :D

Well if an FX chip holds back the GPU's a little bit then yeah its bound to. I had a 3200+ Barton XP and it did hold back the card a bit. In the end - if you have the money and inclination I would upgrade CPU/Mobo/RAM and Vid Card. Remember tho - the vid card will make the most difference to you games :D

Kemp is right... You'll see your largest noticable difference in gaming with a new video card, but your other components are still going to be holding you back its full potential.

I'd go with the vid card now and then pick up the DFI NF3 939 w/ AGP and throw an A64 on it down the road when ur ready.

Except, of course - you'll wait for the next revision that sorts out the issues this board is having :D

ok m8 how much money are you willing to spend? what psu do you have? because if you are going for a 6800Gt you need to have a suffecient PSU because a video card like that need a lot of power ;)

lol if it aint sorted by the time he's ready to upgrade there's something wrong.

Thankfor the input Gents...

I'm currently running some kind of generic Switching 400W Power supply.

I'm powering a USB midi device to control my Guitar Amp, (Fender Cyber Twin) and an infra red remote control reciever for my HD PCI slot Digital TV card along with Two DL DVD burners all off this current PSU at the moment.

I was also running a couple of extra case fans as well when I got started Overclocking only to hit the wall not being able to lock the speed of the AGP slot. :( .

Anyway, how much current do these Nvidia cards draw anyway? I'm guessing from what the crew's saying a fair fucking bit!!! Put together with the higher speed of the Athlon 64 i'm thinking I'm gonna need something substantial. 480W??? 500W??? 600W??

These guy's look like they are based here in Oz and seem to have a decent range, keeping in mind i'm probably gonna want to stretch out the legs on this Venice core jobby a bit ;) .

PC Case Gear

What would you recommend and how far could I go with the standard heatsink/fan setup with a 8cm side mounted fan over it and one induction fan on the lower front with one of these PSU sucking it back out at the top?

Should I just say fuck it and water cool the whole bloody thing and save a bit of strain on the PSU so I can pump a higher Voltage into the core for stability???

Water Cooling

I could justify spending about AUD$1000 for a system that'll last me another three or so years, keeping in mind that i'd be happy just to be able to play games like Far Cry smoothly without having to run shitty resolution ratios, and I do a bit of movie editing, (nothing serious, just a few home movies) ;) surf the net for Porn while Drinking Beer, scotch and tequilla and Smoking Herb  :beerchug: :smoke:

Oh yeah, while watching Australia flog the Pom's in the best Ashes series in years on my HD PCI TV card!! :) :)

Just stirring :) Input appreciated!!!

Cheers,

Mick

great stock performer http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2335.htm

or this for more performance http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2555.htm
