opinions on a second monitor please

i currently have the asus xg258q 1920x1080 240hz monitor and am planning to add an ultrawide as a gaming monitor with the current one becoming a secondary. I am thinking of the asus xg35vq but I am a little hesitant due to the 100hz cap does anyone have any experience with it and can advise.



system is an 8700k wityyh a 1080 ti rog edition - i am not actually an asus fanboy but this does make me look like one

I would say don't. While the real estate is nice on the widescreen. Having 100hz is a big step back for me when I was used to my previous 27inch screen with 165hz.

Had I not sold my old monitor I would have gone back. Maybe its just the model, but I am quite disappointed with my Rog PG348 swift.

In the end, its your wallet of course. Perhaps the Predators are a better option. I am sure there are users on these forums who can also provide advice and input on what widescreen monitors are out there.

I hated the fact that the monitor wasn't even native 100hz. It had to be overclocked. Initially I was ok with it, but some games do show scanlines when OC'd to 100.

As you have an Nvidia card I'd personally go for a G-Sync monitor, Forget 21:9, Too many problems in games, Go for the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q, 1440P 165Hz refresh rate and G-Sync, Great monitor.

Costs the same as the Ultrawide you linked but IMO is soooooo much better due to the much higher refresh rate, The included G-Sync module and no fiddling about with games to try and get them work with 21:9.

there is a sloightly different one being released later this year as part of the pg asus series with 200 hz and g-sync but i suspect the price tag will be eye watering. i mainly play rts and rpg so i suspect 100 hz would suffice generally but would lack on things a little faster paced.

That's the PG35VQ and it's pegged to cost around £2000 due to it having not just 200Hz but full HDR with over 400 individually lit zones which is hella pricey.

an almost connected question. my desk is set up in a long lounge - about 30 ft - with book cases lining the walls and nothiong in the middle of the room so i had a thought of setting up a projector screen about halfway up the room and projecting from the computer does anyone have a decent guide of how tricky this would be? Also would 2 computer screens plus a projector overtax a 1080 TI.

Yeah the original Predator (and Asus I believe) had to be overclocked as they were 75 out of the box. Mine got to 95 fine but I can't get 100 stable. It will run it for one session but as soon as I switch the PC off I have to plug in another cable, reset the monitor and PC display settings and overclock again - absolute PITA.

Fortunately the latest ones are all 100hz native so no more issues. But yeah stuck at 100 which for me was fine going from 60hz triples to this still looks good.

What problems did you have? I haven't found any that don't work however I do mainly play Flight/Space/Racing Sims and the occasional World of Tanks until I rage quit. I think most new games come with 21:9 support however experience varies with how it is implemented - extending the horizontal FOV (correct) or reducing vertical FOV (rubbish)

Games like Fallout4 I believe need "hacking" to support the resolution. FPS/racing/sim games are all ok.

my plan is to keep my current 1920x1080 monitor as a secondary for older games that dont like ultra wide so i dont forsee that being a huge drawback.

on freesync/g-sync current monitorn has freesync which obviouslyu serves no purpose on a 1080 and i have not noticed any issues with tearing etc but i guess its more likely to be an issue at high resolution and lower refresh rates i guess
