OMG - 8GB is faster than 4GB

has anyone else noticed this too?

i just installed another pair of domGT2000s in my rig and..... wow.

win7x64 boots faster...

apps load faster...

better bench scores...

etc.

my graphics apps are having orgasms - there is a huge difference in workability.

it is so worth the extra £110

just awaiting my ridgies to arrive for the other rig now

YAY

I have a hard time believing that. Unless your apps were starved for memory, you shouldn't see any difference. Have you measured the difference or does it just feel faster?

Edit: Not calling you a liar or anything, I'm just skeptical is all.

no, i understand that, ....

with 32 bit, the difference between 2 and 4 gig back in the atlon 64 days was noticeable

Well that was because apps needed that memory. 4 and 8 is a different story. Most of it will be sitting idle. Windows definitely won't use more than a gig or two for booting up. Idle memory doesn't increase performance.

if a system has a low amount of RAM it uses Virtual Memory more often (disk access = slower)

if a win7 system has 8GB, or more, the chances of it using VM is unlikely.

it's faster

That's true, but during the boot up process you won't be swapping with 4GB of memory. Also, unless you're benching with a bunch of other apps running, a typical bench like Heaven or 3DMark won't cause a system to use more than 4GB either.

The gains you are talking about sound more like an upgrade from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD.

But it only uses VM when the physical memory is used up and booting windows does not use up the Physical Memory IIRC it only uses 512mb on boot up. There are only a few RAM dependent programs such as Photoshop an Virtual machines where you should notice they difference, load times for apps might be faster after you have already opened and closed them due to prefetch and the program being partially loaded into the momory, but apart from that there souldn't be much of a difference in terms of speed.

i use (everyday):

  • photoshop CS5 X64
  • 3dsmax2011 SAP x64
  • autoCAD2012 x64
  • visual studio 2010 ultimate
  • realflow
  • mudbox
  • cryengine3
  • unrealEd4

i notice the difference

Oh in these I could definitely see your gains and wouldn't argue that at all.

Edit: And I missed the part about your graphics apps in the OP.

lol - i do not use my rig(s) for playing solitaire, or perusing facebook

they are my business - i am a nextgen console game dev

Ye, but in your original post you didn't mention those apps you said that windows seven and apps load faster which they wouldn't and that is what everyone was questioning, RAM will affect the speed of those apps because they are RAM dependent and the more RAM and the faster it is will speed up tasks within those apps because it doesn't have to use as much if any virtual memory.

Should have explained that

. Makes sense now. What kinda games, are you indie or do you work for someone? Didn't know we had a game dev here, interesting.

I think it's because your using both channels so twice the amount of info can be processed in the same time. I see the difference too

lol - you should read people's bio's

i do

i have been writing games since the 80s - it is my passion - i have freelanced for some major software houses over the years and my REAL name is in the credits/titles of some very well-known games from the 90s and early 00s.

i specialise in writing low-level fragment shaders for special FX, AI and physics.

i was autodesk's intern assessor for two years, but now beta test their subscription pre-releases.

i am currently working on an indie release for PS3-minis and XBLIG

have you worked on a Silicon Graphics computer? I have a friend that did and they cost a bomb, like around £100,000+ back in the 80's

Sick, man! I've just noticed you live in South Wales as well.

I'm currently in my final year of computer animation, specializing in character rigging.

Hmmm - i have, but as you would think i have!

Dreamworks have an SGI Altix UV 1000 server, that they use as their renderfarm, and run Maya on it. i (and a few other animators at reading university) have used it several times to render a few animated shorts.

they aren't cheap - lol
