Odd shut downs / File errors

I've been having this problem for a while now and tried fixing this problem myself (well with suggestions from a few of you :) )...

Basically what happens is: at certain times, when I alt tab or quit games, my PC totally shuts down and reboots. I then do a chkdsk and it finds errors in the file system and needs a chkdsk /f to fix - I do this but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. Eventually the problems get worse and CSS and other things start dissapearing....

I have bought a new HDD, and installed programs 1 by 1 as I have suspected some programs, but it then did the same with minimal stuff installed. I have now formatted the new drive 3 times (I've tried quick and normal format).

This all started happening when I clocked my rig from 2.49 to 2.67. I moved it back to 2.49 and also tried resetting the CMOS to absolute default running at 2GHZ but it still happened!!!

I'm sorry if I've posted too much here but I am trying to pass everything across as I'm out of ideas and REALLY stressed :banghead:. There's a few settings in BIOS I am unsure of and Ham suggested that there was a way to print screen them? If there isn't I can take pictures of the pages I am unsure of....

Please :oc3d:, Fix my rig!!! :)

^ I'd follow up on both of the above. Also try and get us some photo's of the juicy parts of the BIOS (overclocking/mem timings sections) so we can see if anything is skewhiff.

He's only taken his ram up too 2.8v at the highest wich i wouldn't hav thought would be a problem. Are they not warrentied up to 2.8? And would memtest pick it up if it is the ram? I dont think he's tried it yet.

Right well clock it back to 2.47 or whatever

Re-install windows as well

Also it may be worth picking up a decent standalone disk checker by your manufacturer (I know Hitachi does one)

It has been clocked back to 2.49, even when on the old HDD. I reinstalled windows on it once, and I've installed windows on my new drive 3 times. I'll have a look for a disk checker, but it's a new HDD, what's the chances of both my drives having the same problem?

I'll complete a memtest, and if that all shows as ok, I'll get some pics of my bios screens!

You could also try some super pi tests, these are mainly designed to stress your memory and this could show errors ;)

Definatly sounds like the memory though.

Have you not got anyone nearby who you could borrow some off to try ?

Well the thing is, as I have less stuff installed at the moment, the crashes don't seem to be happening. I could borrow a GB of my brothers ram and leave him with 512 for a bit :S

I just need to make a memtest cd and run it overnight...

If I do find errors, surely g.skill will replace the ram? I am certain I have not pushed the ram past 2.8v, but I have pushed it to 267 mhz. Will this void the warranty?? I'm hoping not because I did spend a fair bit on this RAM and like it!

You dont tell them that you pushed it. Just say you stuck it in and its gone wrong.

Ahh right, just wondering as I don't know if they can tell if something was pushed too far. I obviously wouldn't tell them ;)

I did have my suspicions before that it was my RAM. I have started to think this more and more now:

- Yesterday my pc started and only recognised 1GB of ram in my pc.

- When I play d2 and the server restarts, it says 'your map de_dust2 differs from the servers'. It did this on my old HDD and thought it was down to the file errors. But it happened today and thought it could be some of the map loaded onto the ram and being corrupted. So I restarted my pc and got on to the server no problems...

I'll try makin this memtest tonight. I created one before and I dunno where its gone!!! :rollingla
