OC3D Review Cooler Master Silencio 550

This case reminds me of the Cooler Master 330 Elite I used to have and looking at the the top and the sides of the case they look exactly the same (minus the side fan intakes on the 330 elite), I think it could actually be based on the same case and they have just upgraded it.

It's not a bad case but it is around the same price as a CM 690 II ADV and for a few quid extra you can get a Fractal R3. Personally i would go with either the R3 or 690 II because you get better features and imo they are better looking. The Silencio 550 is still worth the money though and with Cooler master you always know that the case is going to be solid and made well.

My feelings exactly; but I would go so far as to drop it down to Bronze or even no award, because I can't help feel that they raided the Coolermaster parts bin and tacked it onto the newer Elite or original 690.

Edit: Oh, HIS 6990 with Eyefinity fun.

my observations:

it looks like the side panels are exactly the same form factor as my CM storm scout. so, if i wanted to make my SS more silent i could buy one of these just for the anti-noise panels, to replace my windowed panel and the rear one.

that front HHD dock will let dust into the system, as fluids (air) will always find the easiest route for flow.

bad oversight there!

also, if a SD card was inserted - how much overhang (jutting out) would there be?

nice SSD tray - i want a few of them - nice to know they now make them

i must now go and shop for them

I quite like that, I think they've gone for maximum silence. Should have had noise dampening material in the top though and the foam on the back panel could have been thinner.

Does that front doc support 2.5" drives? If not it should.

Was it just me, or did that video appear to be quite dark? With it being so plain and black I found it hard to see any of the interior details?

Quick thoughts:

- New hard drive mounts look nicer than the older CM (690, HAF series) ones

- USB3 and SD slot are great additions

- Space for 2x120 fans in the front, not just one in two positions like the 690II

- Take those three things from this and add them to the 690II, and it would be near perfect.

Geeky comment:

- Eggbox acoustic foam increases the surface area, therefore increasing sound absorbtion

Questions for TTL:

- Which Muskin? The Ridgeback?

- Can you flip the door hinge?

1 yep

2 nope

classy grown up case for those of us that want a pc in the living room and dont want a transformer looking box on the desk.

the roll on the end of the mobo tray is something i think coolermaster need to look at, as it always makes routing cables a little harder in their case than it needs to be.

but yeah, R3 is a better buy.

I want a case that doesn't have vents on the side or on top of the case (for looks as well as less noise).

I would also like a case that has a front hot-swappable HDD bay, so I can use my old HDD as backup.

Plus USB3 on front is a must..........

Please explain to me why the R3 would be a better buy?

If that's what you want out of a case then it can't be argued this case is for you.

Generally though the R3 would be recommended first, followed by this I assume.

Can I just say something that has been bugging me for a while now.

If a case doesn't have a window on the side, there's a good chance that a lot of owners are not going to hide all there cables behind the motherboard, so lets not judge to quickly if all cables don't fit behind the motherboard.

Tom is a experienced builder who tends to have the latest hardware installed in his builds & likes to show them off,...we are not all Tom.

I also think people also over estimate how much more "air-flow & lower temp" you get by hiding all of your cables, but do we actually know? I think its time we found out..

Maybe Tom would like to do comparison test of a "tidy system" & say one that has only 50% of the cables hidden?

Not seen any web site who has done this yet, & my guess is there wouldn't be a noticeable difference (but I could be wrong ;o)

All I'm getting at is that everybody's needs differ, so why all the comparisons with the R3?

This is a good case for the price, as is the R3.

So lets all be happy we have another good case on the market, which we can decide to choose, if we wish ;o)

I suppose its that the H2, R3 & Silencio are all vying for the "silencing crown". It would be interesting to compare the sound levels for a given system. But that's hard to do unless you've got the right gear.

Hi @ll,

I saw the review and bought one.

Now I wonder if I should buy Scythe Yasya or Scythe Rasetsu?

(especially because I read it is recommended to get a cooler smaller than 156mm)

Could you please help me out.

Thanks in advance

The Yasya would be better suited as there are no vents on the side panel for the Rasetsu to bring in air from.
