OC3D Review: Alphacool dual drive bay LCD display

Fancy a nice big crisp LCD display on the front of your case but dont want to fork out >£100 for a platinum plated, diamond encrusted, VFD wiring nightmare? (not aimed at any screens in particular lol) then check out Alphacool's 240 x 128 pixel display panel Here

Wow, very nice display at a very good price! Do they make a single 5.25" bay kit? And do they make it in more than just black?

Excellent review llwyd. I saw this before I bought my MediaLab but I am really new at programming and was nervous about being able to use/program it.

Big mistake on my part, that big screen would have looked real nice on the front of my little comp.

Thanks for showing me this. Mark

read the conclusion lol

"The fact that the screen comes in black or silver and in a single bay size and worktop display means that it's up the customer how much space is taken up.

You can see the single bay 200 x 64 pixel display Here for a reasonable £43.

And the 240 x 128 pixel desktop display Here for a similar price to the internal model."

Very very nice, wish I would have known about this before purchasing my CFZ display... Another quick ? which was addressed in the article I'm sure but I'm at work and have to be as quick and brief as possible. Does it have an internal USB connector or just external (only saw an external).

yea it only has an external USB connector, i didnt want to knock out any PCI plates so i just chopped up a USB PCI plate and wired the lot up inside the case - it quite honestly took about 20 seconds to install the lot

great review Llwyd

we've had these displays for ages but have been waiting on software, a very very well written piece of work and as soon as Alphacool are back on my MSN I'll point them in the direction.

Thank you for doing it so well.

Bah that sucks, that's a buykiller for me right there. I don't have any more USB ports on the i/o backplane :( Plus draping a cable across everything isn't sexy :( Crystalfontz it is!

The mediaLab has this adaptor,

I know they sell them separately and would work with any usb. Alsso its really no prob to solder the wires (only 4) to a usb plug

EDIT: found it here is the adapter seperate

ive been through like 5 motherboards that i have never sold on / thrown any of the PCI plates ive gotten with them so i've got a bunch that i can butcher if anyone fancies one. once routed behind the mobo tray and behind the drive racks its not even visible

Edit: added some extra bits to the spec page that ST have pointed out and fixed the two missing image + links on the first page

or you could just purchase a cheapy belkin USB2 pci adaptor, (eg the 5 port) comes with 4x external ports and 1x internal port (proper "A" usb)

HI thanks for the review, I spotted this & have been very tempted but couldnt find any proper reviews so I was suspicious. However reading your review I will have to treat myself to one,

someone has got an ace collection of TUNAGE if they have got pendulum

kool screen but why have a 3m usb cable on it LOL

It's probably so that you can try and hide it as good as possible which means routing it in areas where it could possibly take quite a long cable to reach out of the back panel and in to the socket.

LCD in case

I am currently making a semi scratch case. I am using the fascia from a silverstone case and modded the alphacool LCD into it.

Think it looks okay for an un finished mod.

And I know i need to spray those screws.
