Nvidia's latest driver is ready for Valorant, DirectX 12 Ultimate and more

DirectX 12 Ultimate is such a silly name. What's coming next, surely not DirectX 13?

It's basically DX12 with all of the optional features enabled. It's basically DirectX 12 with all of the features on the Xbox Series X enabled.

Sure, but it's a graphics library. Why is it something to even bother making a marketing campaign of? And more so, it's at odds with their plan to have Dx12 as a long term API. This isn't the Ultimate Dx12 for long.

But I suppose it ties in with Microsoft's other Ultimate products like good ole Windows 7 Ultimate which everyone got totally legitimately and also Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

It allows new GPU purchasers to know that GPUs are raytracing etc ready without relying on 3rd party Nvidia/AMD branding.
 
DX12 Ultimate also encompasses other next-gen features. Mesh shaders, VRS etc. It's a catch-all term. Better than having logos for each individual feature.
All of which have individual names. I just wish they had gone with versioning like DirectX 12.1. It's still the same API for older functionality. Makes next additions a bit less cumbersome to factor in. Then again, I suppose Xbox -> Xbox 360 -> Xbox One -> Xbox One X -> Xbox Series X chain of branding is just as awkward.
I do not understand what the benefit of calling it Ultimate is - what's the benefit in touting Dx12 Ultimate support instead of just sticking to hyping up Ray Tracing with Scarlett. It's not like VRS is a concept a Best Buy customer would give a toss about.

You could say, the initial Dx12 release was not the proper full fat release we were promised. And since that was around the Nvidia 9xx series, by the time they introduced what they needed, the features in ultimate were not supported with the 9xx series.

They should have just called it 12.1 like they used to.

Indeed, it's mostly a new lower level approach to graphics APIs among with Mantle(nowadays Vulkan), which will probably carry on for years without a new major version.

And they already outlined feature levels, which the Ultimate also essentially is. I do not understand why it was necessary to translate that to marketing terms.
 
Well you mean DX12 that never worked better than DX 11,12..:rolleyes:

It never worked well because it was never used properly. There are a handful of games that were made with DX12. Most of them are DX11 with some features from DX12. Win 7 didn't support DX12 and no developer wanted to just exclude 50% of the consumer market. So there were never proper DX12 games. The performance should be on pair with Vulkan.
