Nvidia reportedly pushed back the RTX 3080 Ti's launch

I wonder what AMD will do in retort to this. They'll fall behind (at least on paper) if they don't make a price cut (again, on paper).

Nvidia, AMD, it's all much of a muchness to Joe Public just now to be honest; when both can actually catch up on quantity of product and availability as opposed to new releases I personally might start paying more attention to news and reviews (no slight intended to either Mark or TTL).

I don't think either wants to fall behind in product development, it's completely separate from manufacturing. Releasing new models isn't going to affect shortage.

I think you'll find both companies are two or three generations ahead in R&D (physical and theoretical), releasing products in insufficient quantity to supply market demand and the short sightedness of both companies in respect of this is my point.

Your R&D argument is kinda mute when the average person can't even buy current generation GPU's off the shelf in the here and now; I'll wager most consumers don't really give a toss about the next best thing when they can't even buy a GPU of ANY flavour at the moment.

But what's the issue with releasing new SKUs, once they can catch up with shortage, surely they should focus on cutting edge products? Not like refraining from new releases is gong to make the shortage any better either.

These new releases in this case should also help alleviate the shortage, a 3080 Ti will just use slightly cut 3090 chips, but with half the memory chip demands without much impact to gamers. The 3070 Ti seems to be a 3070 but it can make use of GDDR6X chips, so there are 3070 SKUs for two lines of memory chips, so these new SKUs should increase the supply of gaming GPUs

There will be a larger flow into the market as they aren't going to cut down on the production of other sku's just to make different ones, they speed bin all the chips made, so more sku's means more gpu's in my view.

Edit: AMD are doing well from my view, their version of dlss might actually be far better than people are expecting, but they do have big plans with rdna they will not slow down so nvidia will need to keep up cause as for amd being behind i don't agree they are more or less on par atm.

DXR wise amd might be behind, but my 6800XT has no issues playing any DXR game, the gap is smaller than i think most realise tbh fps numbers are not everything if a game is perfectly playable.

add to that that rdna3 onwards are going to most likely be as big as 100% more each gen coming then the tables may well turn if nvidia don't do more than they are currently.

There really arent that many DXR games I have most all of them so 99% of games on PC amd do very well in, nvidia are ahead in that fps number but that is all, but amd will do better going forward cause there will be many games coming that are focused from the consoles easy to port for amd drivers.

I'll be a little sad thou if i need to upgrade again in a few years, but going by the little i've heard that might well be the case but i at least hope to hold on till rdna4 :D

TBH, one of the big upgrades to these RTX 30 Ti GPUs appears to be memory bandwidth. I see that as a clear sign that AMD is onto a good thing with their Infinity Cache. Why else would Nvidia see the need to upgrade bandwidth like this?

AMD just needs to launch GPUs with reasonable prices and get good integrations for their technologies into a few more games for that added mindshare.

Sadly, RT perf will not get better without a new/upgraded architecture from AMD. That said, optimisations for RT on consoles will be good for AMD, or at a minimum make them look less bad.

If AMD can keep up their momentum, they will have some excellent hardware in a few years. Nvidia's focus with Ampere was not purely on PC, and that lack of gaming focus gives AMD an opportunity to surpass them. Even so, AMD has a long way to go, and NV are not sitting on their hands archtecture-wise.

Interesting times are ahead for the GPU market.
