Nvidia GTX970 SLi or GTX980Ti

Hey all,

I was originally going to go with a GTX960 SLi but i have changed my mind so now GTX970 SLi or single GTX980Ti.

Here i can get 2 GTX970's but not for much extra money i can get a GTX980Ti so i'm thinking the GTX980Ti might be the best choice in the long run.

With Pascal coming so i could get one GTX980Ti now and wait until the until price drops with the new GPU's coming, Also i have already made my mind up on which one.

Thanks

What do you have now? Iirc you are on 1080p, all of those setups are way overkill for that. Personally I'd wait until Polaris comes out(rumored to come out before Pascal at the moment) and see how that is. If you don't like what they have to offer wait till Pascal if your current performance is fine now.

BTW I'd never recommend a GTX 960, it's a pretty crap card tbh. A 380x is much much more powerful and same price(at least here). If you desperately want to upgrade either a single 390/970 will do at 1080p until the next stuff comes out. Although if you really want more I don't think a single 980ti/ 2 970's is really worth it for 1080p. I'd say a 390x/980 at max. Now if i'm wrong and you are on 1440p then a 980ti/Fury X for the best experience at that res.

I'm planning on selling both of the GPU's i have 1. GTX970 2. R9 390, I just want to go to a GTX980Ti also i'm not interested in Pascal or Polaris i don't really pay newer games but i do play a few modded games namely Skyrim.

I'm also planning on changing my monitors as well sometime soon as well.

TBH you would need to take into account things like warranty. At the moment you can get a decent 980ti for around $1200.

I know what you're getting at ;) I just need to sell these GTX970 & R9 390

Yeah that is what i'm thinking now, I would still like to have two GTX980Ti's at one point, I really hate this MSI GTX970 the amount of sag this card has it's silly.
Yeah MSI were stupid for not putting backplates on their cards but their Ti's do have them and the are really nice cards but they all perform around the same so get the cheapest at the time with a backplate
This is a good buy ATM https://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?InventoryItemId=622009 everywhere else 980Ti's start at $1049

Yep i know with the warranty, I already know which GTX980Ti i want.

One beast card is better than two average ones. (apart from looks)

Go the Ti :)

Yep that's the plan now, but i have said i still would like to have Two one day.

Yes very stupid which will make me never buy another MSI GPU ever again, I already know which GTX980Ti i want.
TBH i wouldn't be shocked if MSI did the same bonehead move again.

I had a look at the Galax i'm not really looking for a white GPU, I will say the price is good, I will be going with a all or near all black GPU.

I still have to make my mind up where i'm going to try and sell my PC parts cause i will not be listing them on ebay since what happen the last time.

Damn i need to sell these two GPU's i have so i can get this GTX980Ti, one place here is like $166.00 cheaper than the other two places.

Oh well if i miss out on that price so be it.

I would not buy a 980ti now.

Unless you really need it (like I needed a second Fury X for 4k) then I would wait until Pascal comes out. What will happen is Pascal will be far more powerful and use half of the power, so even if you were thinking about going SLI 980ti you will reconsider because of the power use and heat.

I had two Titan Black and when the Fury X and 980ti came out they used about 1/3 of the power and performed the same on a single card. This made it very hard for me to keep them, as they used to run pretty hot in SLI too.

I would either hang on to what you have or (forgetting which GPU you have now) go SLI 970. It's not what they will sell for it's that you will lose less money in the long run, and that's the critical thing about PC parts.

The 980ti and Fury X have been around for a while now and are not worth $1200 AUS IMO. That is pretty much launch price (it's £600 here in the UK which is ridiculous) and they have been around for about six months or more now meaning that they could be replaced completely come April/May.

Edit, please read. I based my advice above on you already having a 970. I read your OP and tbh I have forgotten what you are using. So you will need to clarify but yeah, I still think buying a 980ti could be a bad mistake within a few months.

These top tier expensive cards are only worth it around launch time unless the prices drop dramatically, which they haven't. Buying one now knowing it could be replaced at any time with something the same price only twice as powerful/uses half the leccy/gets nowhere near as hot is a mistake IMO.

The problem is if i wait until Pascal comes out i'm not going to get the money i want for these GPU now, I have the MSI GTX970 and i don't like it the amount of sag this card has is BS i just want to get rid of it.

You won't get much back for a 980ti either though dude.

PC parts are all about how much money you lose. Nothing increases in value it all drops, and when a new tech comes out old tech is worth hardly anything. Look at the GTX 780, they now make £120.

Paying top end top dollar for a high end part must be done on day 1 IMO. That way you get the most value out of it and it lasts a whole lot longer before it's replaced. Paying more than what seems to be launch price now is nuts.

Seeing as you do have a 970 I would stick with my advice, but, tell you to look into GPU supports. I just think that you will lose the least money by doing that and you would have more than enough power.

My plan will end up being is buying 1 980Ti soon and another one down the line once Pascal comes out and i have said earlier in the thread i not really interested in Pascal, I know i will get the money i want for them.

I'm not keep is crappy MSI GTX970, Never been happy with it.

I can speak from experience that sli 970s are fantastic, I have found very few games that have had issues with them.

That goes in with what I said earlier dude. The chances are that the successor to the 980ti will be twice as powerful whilst using less electricity. Running two 980tis will be a waste of power and you'll have the heat to deal with.

That was what happened with my Titan Blacks. The 980ti and Fury X were faster than both of them but required no special drivers or tricks to make it work. I gamed happily on one Fury X for ages, until I decided I wanted to up the settings so now I have another.

And guess what? when high end Polaris comes out using 1/3 of the power of my Fury X and producing the same frames without any driver issues I will want Polaris.

Running 980ti SLI will make absolutely no sense whatsoever when you could do the same thing only without any aggro on one card.

And that goes back to my other point. The 980ti has been out for a while now and as every day passes that's another day that it loses value. As soon as Pascal/Polaris drop they won't be worth anything. I ended up selling my TBs for £500. I paid £1400 for them 9 months before that.

It's up to you dude, but just take it from some one who knows, high end PC equipment is a complete and total waste of money, and sometimes time.

Either stick with what you have or SLI it as cheaply as possible or hold out all together for Pascal and Polaris.

Unless of course you like wasting your money, in which case buy whatever you like I guess :)

I have to agree with AlienALX, in my case I really want to get a new graphics card but they are really expensive so I rather wait to launch the graphics cards which will be alot better and in the mean time I'll have to play my games at medium settings.

I bought my GTX680 almost at launch and I sure that it was the best time to get it because I don't change my graphics card really often so in that way I could get the best lifespan of the product.

With all respect, I don't think it is a smart move to get a top of the line graphics card when its lifespan is almost over.

But everyone knows what to do with their things, this is just my opinion based on my experience.
