I have this distinct feeling that unless they want to go the way of Blockbuster video they will have no choice.

Nobody besides Steam can compete with Sony, and Steam is not on the same platform.
So what MS is trying to do to keep up with the sheer popularity and player base size is just partner with everyone other than Sony so ANY person can play on everything but a PS. It's the only way to stop Sony's grip on consoles. Fair play to MS. It's a good strategy. However once they win, who knows if they'll continue to be very non exclusive.
