Nvidia 8800GT overheating

I have an NVIDIA 8800GT card from XFX that I have tried to install on a micro ATX board. I have a small case and no case fan. I have been advised that I need to replace the cooling fan on the card but am reluctant to do so. Would replacing the case with a larger case and a fan help?

Alternatively, can anyone suggest what is the best graphics card I could get that is likely to work in this setup. My present motherboard has only a PCI Express ver1 slot (I downgraded the BIOS of the 8800GT card to get it to work in this slot). Thanks, Thony:

8800gt does get quite hot so yeh

id recommend an aftermarket cooler such as arctic cooling accelero rev2.

its silent and keeps it cool, easy to install really.

or perhaps underclock the card?

or position an internal fan blowing air at the card

or yeh, the most expensive fix being a new case

What do you mean by this exactly?as that card is backwards compatible and will run in a PCIE 1.0 slot fine

yeh that could be causing problems too

i know with 8800gts most companies released a bios flash to kick the fan in at an appropriate time

so maybe u shud reflash it

You sure your not thinking of the rev.2 XFX 8800GT?

They released a BIOS update for that after the fans would not go past 29% until the thing was almost at melting point.(was happy with my rev.1 that worked fine)

well i know evga released a bios to MAKE the fans kick in before like 70c.

Made it noisy but kept it cool
