No signal to monitor

firstbuild

New member
Hi This is my first build PC and as far as I see I have everything connected

Asus P5WD2 Prem MB

Sapphire X1650 Pro

Hiper 580 w Power

Just listed these for your info. When I power up theres no signal to monitor. (tried a bifferent mon and still no signal) Were did I go wrong.

I have the grapic card in the top Blue slot in my MB PCIEX16_1

thanks

This is a fairly regular issue. Try plugging the monitor into the motherboard & going to the bios settings. Select the option to use PCIE as the primary display device, then save & reboot with the monitor now plugged into your card.

Edit: Oops, just saw that this mobo does'nt have onboard VGA. Sorry!

Don't think it matters which pci-e slot the card is in but the primary is the one closest to the CPU socket.

I assume you have the 6pin pcie connected to the gfx card?

Are you using vga or dvi? Tried both? Monitor works?

So, what exactly happens? Power on, beeps? Lights? Fans? Nothing?

You might have to take out everything bar cpu, gfx and one stick of ram, go into the bios, up the ram voltage to the specified (lots of mobos default at 1.8v whilst most ram uses 2.1/2.2 volts)...

Try those, try clear the cmos too...

Hi I did look before i posted and I dont see a 6pin socket on my card to connect any thing to.

Its as far as i see dvi I dont hear bleeps but then im not sure if the wee fine wires are in the right place on the MB (BRH Side)

When I switch on all the fans come on but I cant switch off the PC with the on Button.

Taken a look at pics of the card, and it doesn`t have a power connector on it, not even molex.

If ur not sure about the `wee wires`, which I`m assuming are the on-switch/speaker/reset/etc/etc - please do check with u`r case and motherboard manual so that u are sure.

To be fair, u`ll be chasing u`rself around in circles if this bank of plugs aren`t put on in the correct fashion.

1 simple thing is if the On-Switch is connected to the reset. The mobo can be stuck in a frozen state. U`ll see leds on, no screen and fans will be going.

Thanks I check out the wireing for the on switch etc.

I have a total of 4 pluges with 2 wire in each..

W/G Power HD

W/Y HD LED

W/Y Power SW

W/O Reset SW

Shouldnt be that difficult to put these in the right place you would think :)

Right, Could I ask Which way round for a start and is the contact up to down or Right to left if you know what I mean.

Theres no audio wires in that bunch but I do have a Audio HD socket pluged to the MB (Theres another bunch of fine wires attached to this Audio HD cable)

The manual for your motherboard has this diagram:

e2086_p5wd2premium.jpg

For the switches it doesn't matter which way round you put them on there. For the leds it does (I think).

My rule of thumb is that the writing on each one should face the same direction and that direction is usually toward the edge of the board, but not always.

When you said:

W/G Power HD

W/Y HD LED

W/Y Power SW

W/O Reset SW

Does "W/G" mean "White/Green"?

If so, lets assume the white wire is the ground/negative for each and try plugging them all in with the white wire on the right (assuming you're looking at the board from the same direction as the diagram above).

Edit: To clarify - contact is left-right, not up-down

Edit: Ignore the speaker pins, they are for a "PC speaker" which only some pc cases have.

Right thanks. Starting on top row L to Right and calling it 1 to 10 and bottom row L to right calling it 11 to 20.

Can you please tell me what goes where. I have tried it so many times. The power switch must be in the right place cause it swirches on but not off and no beeps

Thanks for your time.

It is possible you have the power switch where reset should be, so lets not assume anything at this stage.

Here is what I reckon - pin numbers in ()

Power HD G(1)/W(3)

HD LED Y(10)/W(11)

Power SW Y(16)/W(17)

Reset SW O(19)/W(20)

Edit: Assuming again, you have the motherboard up the same way as the image I posted, that is with these pins at the edge nearest to yourself.

Hi thank you for taking the time first of all.

You said Power 1 and 3 but I only have a two wire plug do you mean 1 to 2 AND HD Led do you mean 10 and 20 or 11 and 12

Remember L to R starting with 1 at L and 10 at R and Bottom row starting with 11 at bottom L and ending with 20 at Right

You should have three 2 pin plugs (HD LED, Power SW, Reset SW) and one 3 pin plug (Power HD) - actually it's 2 pin but it's 3 slots big. I assume Power HD is PLED from the diagram and is actually the light on the front of the case showing you have power.

Are you by any chance confusing the Power SW with Power HD. The Power SW is 2 pin, and goes on 19 & 20, but Power HD (PLED) is 3 pin and goes on 1 & 3.

Oops. I got HD LED wrong, sorry. Its 11 & 12.

Hi nrage, Problem sloved. The reason the Monitor didnt power up was because I needed to plug another lead from the PSU to a EXT12v power socket. I think the processor wasnt getting power. But the Power LED thing isnt sorted yet. Your right it should be a 3pin plug but theres only 2 in the one I have, White/Green Any ideas how to get round this or any one else got an idea. I think thats were the problem was and I had the wires in the right place all along. If I had this sorted hopefully thats it done.

Thanks

Well I got my first build PC up and running and just want to say thanks for all your help and Patience. Whats next to do, Do I install Graphic card CD or MB CD not sure about this bit to complete the build.

Thanks again

I would download the lastest drivers for your Graphics card from the ATI website.

But I would probably use the motherboard drivers that came with the board. ;)

Hi, Is it really nessary to download / install the lastest drivers for your Graphics card and MB.

What is the benifit, If its working fine as it is.

Sorry if thats a stupid question.

Personaly id use the ones that came with the hardware. If theres any issues with stability/new games then upgrade them to the newest ones.

Still use 88.91 on my 7800...

If it ain't broke dont fix it.
