No High End Steamroller Opterons in 2014, What of the Steamroller FX Chip?

AMD's latest server roadmap is out.
http://hothardware.com/News/AMD-Outlines-2014-Server-Roadmap-To-Recapture-Enterprise-Market-Share/

The telling thing is that the next gen version of the 4/8/12/16 core Opterons will be with Piledriver as opposed to Steamroller. It seems the only version of Steamroller that'll make its way to the server world is in APU form via Kaveri.

That doesn't look good for the prospect of a Steamroller based FX chip next year, given you'll normally see AMD release an Opteron version of the chip before it comes to the desktop.

Cue the wait for their desktop roadmap for next year I guess. Best not to jump to conclusions yet, but it makes the future of the AM3+ platform pretty uncertain.

I do hope AM3+ has a future, and I want it to be bright :)
IMO AMD doesn't get the love it deserves. Intel just built a really true fanbase I guess :p

AMD was written off before they barely got started and they have continued to be the little engine that could and have kept chugging along.

Honestly AMD isn't that bad :p
The 8350 is better than the i5s / i7s in quite a few games and they kill the Intels in livestreaming :p
If you're a gamer AMD is a no-go imho.

This is only the server world so who knows. In a way AMD would be right to completely abandon the high-end server market since they've almost totally lost that to Intel. Their focus right now seems to be on micro servers which is anybody's ball game at the minute.

Here's the 2013 desktop roadmap:

I'll reserve all judgement until I see the 2014 version. Hopefully Vishera will see a successor.

I hope AMD do release something next year, either that or I hope Intel release something actually worth upgrading to.
Rumour has it Haswell Extreme 8 cores are coming next year, so I wonder if Intel will release 8 core Broadwell CPUs as well? If so, AMD will have to bring something out, Piledriver isn't going to cut it if they don't.

i hope amd release desktop steamroller on am3+ at the start of next year.
steamroller has always been intended as the core which begins to properly optimize/improve the bulldozer design and deliver increased ipc, unlike piledriver which was intended to improve power consumption/heat production and increase clock speeds.

steamroller has the potential to put amd back on the map, hopefully it will be released for the am3+ platform and be released sooner rather than later.

yeah me too mate it is on my upgrade plan haha

steamroller aint supposed to be out until next year anyway as far as i am aware
Well that's the thing. When AMD normally release their high end Desktop CPUs, they almost always release an Opteron Server variant of the same chip beforehand. For example, the FX-8350 is just the same as the Opteron 6328 just with higher clocks, or the Phenom II X6 1090T would have came from the Opteron 2435.

The fact that a big Steamroller based Opteron isn't on the roadmap doesn't look good for us people anticipating a Steamroller based FX chip to upgrade to. It's unlikely we'll see one if this is the case.

On the other hand, they could release something for the FM2+ socket I guess, which wouldn't really be any harm as the AM3+ is getting pretty long in the tooth now.

Agreed I think they will push fm2 socket now, I was gonna get on pile driver but I'm definitely holding off now.

If AMD are indeed releasing a Steamroller based Opteron as this article suggests then how shortly would a Steamroller FX chip follow?

looks like 12/16 cores in 2014 then i guess steam roller FX will be 2015 or not at all seeming as the APUs are getting stream roller first :(

but 16 piledriver cores will be..... umm how do i put this? hot lol

remember trinity had piledriver before am3+ had it, it is still a possible for steamroller to be released in 2014. i really hope am3+ isn't dead

As I was saying earlier in the thread, in the past they always had an Opteron variant of their flagship desktop CPU out first. You'll notice "Warsaw" is with Piledriver as opposed to Steamroller.

Which means it ain't looking good for an 8 core Steamroller chip on AM3+ as it stands now. Although I find it hard to believe Vishera won't have some sort of successor, I'd say the more likely thing is that we'll see the next gen FX chips on FM2+ as opposed to AM3+.

Still though, we haven't got a desktop roadmap yet, so nothing is certain until then.

Yeah but the article I linked doesn't says (page 4) "the company clearly stated that its Opteron “Abu Dbabi” powered by Piledriver high-performance x86 cores will be its focus for 2013 and 2014."
I know it's all only speculation until AMD actually want us to know though.

That article is dated back in February though.

Another odd thing about the server roadmap is that it would suggest that the ARM offering will replace the x86 Jaguar Opterons. It seems a little strange that AMD would kill off the server variant of the successor the their most successful chip ever [Brazos].

Anyway everything is speculation until you see an actual desktop roadmap from them. :p

I've posted a link to one... guess no one read my post earlier.
Towards middle of page.
