New Rig for a friend

Hey guys,

My friend asked me to come up with some components for his new rig, I'm no genius when it comes to hardware but I kind of know the in's and out's.

My friend does mostly CAD designing; video editing (and rendering) and the ocassional game very now and then.) He wants to spend a MAX of $1850.00. I do live in South Africa so the prices of components here are mostly from $100-$200 more compared to what some one would pay in the US/UK. He will also be looking at getting three 1920X1080p monitors.

Okay now for the components. Please can you give advice as to if there will be any bottlenecks; waste of money; overkill; underkill; whether the parts are compatible etc.

The rig:
-CPU: Intel i74770K.

-CPU Cooler: Corsair H75
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181058

-Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 GAMING (1150)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130692

-Memory: CORSAIR CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233365

-SSD: SAMSUNG 840 EVO 250GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147253

-HDD: He will be transferring his old HDD across so no need to buy new ones.

-Video Card: MSI N770 TF 4GD5/OC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127747

-Case: COOLER MASTER SCOUT 2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119264

-Power Supply: CORSAIR RM750
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139055

Please help me guys to make sure this RIG is 100% perfect before I order all the parts for him.

Thanks Eddyyz

You can get really good value for money CPU coolers, such as the CM Hyper 212 for about £20, and they perform much better than the stock coolers, allowing you to have a quieter and cooler running PC.

I don't see anything that stands out on the list as being incompatible, looks pretty good.

Thanks for the response. I can't find a CM hyper 212 in SA, most places are out of stock. Would some thing like the Corsair H75 be a good alternative?

Any of the AIOs like the H75/H60 etc. will work well for a stock clocked 4770k.

Anything to avoid the stock cooler really ;)

I actually just build a allmost the same Pc for my work as well but we run autocad 2007.
All i can say is the gtx 560 ti sometimes has a bit of trouble with large drawings when fully zoomed out and panning, but nothing horrible really.

Also i got the same case and i must say it was a joy to work with and lots of cooling options as well.
If you want to see what it looks like with all the parts in it go here: http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=59360

And yes i also got the CM 212 evo that is pretty damn silent and cools very good as well.
The first thing you want to replace is any brand stock CPU cooler, specially when you live in SA.
Not sure what your temps are there tho, but it sounds pretty warm to me ^_^
Hope this helps.

I would change the case for something like a fractal design R4 or Arc Midi R2. Much better than that cooler master one.

I do like the Fractal design cases, unfortunately the shop that I am buying all these products from does not supply Fractal cases.

Do you think all the parts will fit nicely in a Scout 2?

TBH yes but will be quite space limited. I would look into the Corsair 330r or something of the sort.

Yeah I went with a GTX 770 - 4GB instead of the GTX 760 - 4GB, to give it more grunt.

Another one of my friends has the Scout and I must say I am very impressed with the case. I never doubted it since I chose it.

I replaced the stock cooler with the Corsair H75, the problem with the CM 212 evo is that the shop that I am buying all these products from doesn't have any stock of that item. Although I am 80% confident that the H75 will keep it well chilled, and yes South Africa is quite a bit warmer compared to some of the EU countries.

Yeah were lucky here in europe we can get parts form pretty much any brand indeed.
To get back to the Scout 2 case, as you can see everything fits in it nicely:

As for the GPU, i'm running 2 monitors on the 560 ti and it runs ok, going 3 screens as you wrote you need something more powerfull no doubt.
If i'm correct you are going to want a GPU with 1GB memory available for each monitor you hook up to it, so 4Gb is perfect.
Can you give us a idea of local temps where you live? just wondering ^_^

Yeah that's a big downside to South Africa, we either have to import items which costs a ton of cash or just use what the online stores supply us.

I looked at your thread and yeah I am definitely sticking with the case, I like it a lot. Very nice RIG BTW! B)

I do think the 770 - 4GB card will handle 3 monitors with absolute ease.

The temperatures vary quite a lot where I live, one day it could be raining and the next day boiling hot. I would say our average temperatures are around 25 (Degree's Celsius).

Rig for a friend

If you have seen this post before, I have changed most of the components so wanted to start fresh, to get more opinions.

- CPU: Intel i5-4670

- CPU Cooler: Corsair H75 (This maybe pointless due to a non-k CPU, but the area we live in is quite hot and its on special where I live).

- Motherboard: MSI B85-G43 Gaming(1150)

- Memory: CORSAIR CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10B

I can merge them if you want, let me know.

As you said yourself the CPU cooler is a bit overkill, but fair enough if it's really that hot and you're getting a good deal.

4GB on a GTX 760 is pretty pointless. For that same price you can get a GTX 770 or R9 280(x). Also; at 27" you better go 1440p, won't have to buy 2 of them either. I get that the higher resolution means more VRAM will be used, but it's better to invest a bit in a GPU or stay on 1080p for now (in which case, please take a 24" monitor), or go the AMD route since they have 3GB VRAM.

I agree with Feronix on getting a better GPU with less VRAM if you can pick one up for the same price.

I'd still get an H75 even if you can't overclock your CPU, it's still going to cool better than air, and most likely you'll be able to run the fan quieter.

I'd prefer dual 1080p monitors over a single larger 1440p monitor for general work. I'd get a 1440p monitor over the two 1080p monitors for gaming, but you said he won't be doing much, so I'd prefer the dual monitors.

Couldn't you just update the old thread with the new components?

You can edit the original post with the new components, as well as posting them in a new post on the thread to let people know they have been updated.

Hey, sorry. I'm on a rubbish little lap top so I have had many headaches typing this out.

Hey, Yes please, if you can please merge them, as said above, this laptop was obviously made to give headaches :P

My friend is set on getting these two monitors, do you think the 760 - 4GB version will still be fine or do you still recommend getting some thing better, just please remember he might eventually run 3 X 1080p monitors so the graphics card must have the grunt to do that.

Thanks for your help!

Hey, yeah TBH I've never been a fan of air cooling. So I am pretty sure the H75 is perfect.

As I said above, he is set on these monitors so could you please maybe advice working around him having two and maybe eventually three 1080p monitors.

Thanks for your help!

It's not a problem, it was just a suggestion :)

If there is no gaming, I'm sure the 760 would be fine for a 3 screen setup, I doubt it would even come close to using the 4GB VRAM while not gaming. I'm not exactly sure how much VRAM you need for gaming on 3 1080p monitors, because I've never done it.

I'm worried how it will preform when it comes to gaming though, I'm pretty sure it will handle normal desktop stuff.
