New phone advice!

What would you say is the best dual core phone for browsing web pages in full quality, overclocking with set-CPU, rooting, playing video and games on and just tinkering with in general that isn't tied to a contract (i.e. new, unlocked)?

The Motorola phones seem to be pretty appealing at the moment. Samsung is another that I'd look into.

There is a new motorola RAZR coming out, which looks really good. I have a Galaxy S2 and web browsing is excellent on its beautiful Super AMOLED screen. I have not overclocked it, but I have seen videos of it being overclocked to 1.5GHz.

Gaming wise it is pretty good, but gaming on a touch screen is hit and miss and is really only suited to certain types of games (Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Racing games, etc). If you want to play FPS games, you will probably already know that the touch interface isn't the best for them.

There are loads of custom ROMS for the Galaxy S2.

Cant go wrong with samsungs galaxy s series. I have the Galaxy S and I used to make themes for it on xda back in the day. Great screen, fast cpu and there are a Ton of custom roms that make the phone super fluid. Wouldnt really recommend overclocking though lol.

Galaxy S two is the way to go, or hold out for the nexus prime with ice cream sandwich.

.If you need any help with rooting etc, im your man. I have over 1.2 thousand posts on xda, guess where my holidays were spent lol.

lol. Yep, overclocking is not a good idea at all, since the galaxy s2 get's pretty toasty at 1.2GHz during intensive applications.

RAZR is not as good as the GS2 from reviews I've seen.

I'm in my final year of schooling so not planning to go out and spend £600 on the likes of the Note7000 or GS2 as such.

Motorola Atrix is the cheapest dual core I can find at ~£300. Xperia Play is about ~£190 and although it has a fast CPU I guess it's only single core?

Something not immensely expensive but good enough to overclock a bit and with a good library of custom roms?

He wants to tinker. Not be stuck with whatever Apple give you/charge you for

I'm still with my HTC desire, battery is getting a bit bad of late (you can change batteries!!!!!)

Still fast and smooth, using oxygen rom (http://forum.oxygen.im/) they also do it for the galaxy s2 i believe.

You can go as deep as you want with android phones, especially with the targeted modding phones like the desire, nexus, galaxy etc. down to kernel level!

I'd prolly go for the s2. I'm sure ICS will be officially released for it/hacked for it. Waiting on ICS for the desire

Thank you!

I know the 4S is the best raw performance out of the box, I'm not that stupid.

4S is just ridiculously popular and full of Angry Birds dweebs.

I'm not after the best phone because that would only last the blink of an eye.

AFAIK you can't overclock the 4S either.

Something to hack to smitherines and rebuild the way I want it

and that doesn't cost the earth.

The reason I would prefer dual core is I see future apps being multithreaded only - meaning a single core would rapidly stagnate
