New laptop - brands?

Hey everyone, my brother is in need of a new laptop and has come to me for recommendations. Now figuring out what spec he needs is no problem for me, what I have a problem with is I have no idea which brands I should avoid/prefer. And since there's no real way to narrow down his options without knowing that I've decided to ask for help on here.

So as said above, which laptop brands should I avoid? And which should I prefer?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on what you want really. MSI and Asus are good laptops. HP Elitebooks too (not consumer pricing though) and Lenovo should be fine. I would avoid Acer although I dont know if theyve gotten better over the past few years.

Most laptops will be fine if you dont carry them all day every day to school/work. If you do, you want a small (not larger screen size than 15.6") and sturdy laptop. Like my Elitebook which ive had for over 2 years now. Ive once sat on its side (and im not the skinniest) because i put my bag which was standing up under my college seat. Banged it a few times against the ground and a few doors with my bag and it still performs fine!

Ok to give an idea of price I don't think we need to spend more than say £500 on him. So Elitebooks are out of the question :P
EDIT I presume other HP laptops are OK?

Haha :P You always need to know what somebody wants before you can give any advice.

But I think normal HP laptops are ok, some people complain about heat as far as Ive read, but thats often an assue with laptops. But otherwise I dont know why you wouldnt want to buy an HP.

Ok thanks for the advice. To everyone else hold fire on suggestions, need to convince the mother that realistically we should be spending more than £200 on a new laptop not less than :/
