Hi guys,
Since I've got my new build up running now, I figured I'd give folding a try.

I downloaded the newest version of the desktop app from the F@H website and just ran it. I haven't set anything except for putting in the team number and a username.

One question I do have though, My CPU is being used 100% and I see a setting for how much CPU used in the settings, but the GPU seems to be only around 50% used? I was wondering if this is normal, or if there is some setting I have to set to get the GPU to be used 100%?

Here is a screenshot:

Edit: I now have my passkey and I am reading the guide on here now.

In any case hello everyone!

Thanks! I figured as much. I had a look in the settings but I dont really know what to look for? it does use half of the gnu so it seems to be doing something, but just not running at full capacity

it is a single 7950

The GPU(s) percentage are configured by the client,
I have no experience with a Ati card and Folding , might be something to do with a Ati card :(

when you are Folding are you only Folding or doing more stuff at the same time ?

Ray.......

there is always a bunch of stuff open but nothing that should be using the gpu very much. i have it going for a few hours as i was watching tv,so just light video playback. I've since stopped the video but it's still at 50%

anyway i'm heading to bed now but maybe someone else has experience with amd cards and folding.

I did have a couple other questions though. I see people talking about there points per day, and i was wondering, so far since i started it seems the PPD has gone up and down, how do you determine what you actual PPD is? Also I see a 'time left' 21 hours, does it actually stop after that or does it just restart and run again? I always figured you could just keep it running 24/7 if you wanted to, so i was just wondering why the ETA?

Hey Andre, welcome to the team.

We usually check our stats on the following website:

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=98860

On the left, if you click on "Team users list" you will find the list of folders for team 98860. You will probably be on page 2 - 3 or even further back depending on how many points you have. If you click on your own username, it will give you a breakdown of your points by Month, Week, Day and Hour.

alright thanks man!

i noticed there is also a stats page on the stanford site.

on the site it's saying i have 217 points and in the desktop application its saying 20,977 ppd. just curious how the ppd listed there related to the points listed on the site? i haven't had it running for an entire day yet but probably 12-14 hours or so.

ppd = (average) points per day, so not really points per WU. Also it usually takes a while for the database to show your actual points.

i figured it would take at least a day or more to get the points up to date.

as far as the driver stuff i happen to have a fairly new install of win 7 sitting on a hard drive that i was using to test a theory i had, and it only has ever had 1 driver installed there which is 12.10, so im going to go and see if it puts a proper load on the gpu when i run folding on there and see if the beta driver issue is the problem.

Good luck with it mate :)
I used to fold on my PS3, but sony doesn't support it anymore :(

hi guys,

so i tried it on my benchmarking copy of win 7 which has only ever had 12.10 on it and sure enough it does use 99% of the gpu on there.

I've tried catalyst 12.8,12.10,and the beta 12.11 drivers all clean installs on Win 8 and still can't get it to use more than 50% of the cpu in windows 8.

In windows 7 I have catalyst 12.10 and it uses 100% of the gpu and there are no issues.

As of right now I have not found a solution to this.

Sounds almost like Win8 is doing this,
sadly i have no experience with Win8 , so i can´t help right now...

After a look around on google it seems to be a fairly common issue with Win 8. Some people are reporting 50% usage on Nvidia cards too in windows 8. Some said when they had a fresh install of Win 8 with no beta drivers ever installed it was working but after installing 12.11 beta it never worked right again no matter how much "cleaning" up the scattered driver files and reinstalling non beta drivers.

Not sure who will have to release an update to address this but I do have a copy of windows 7 installed that I can boot into and fold on sometimes in the mean time.

If anyone else has suggestions or experience with this I am open to play around a bit more, but I've spent quiet a bit of time trying to get it to work already.

Does anyone here run the 3D visualization when they are folding? I notice it does take about 6% of my cpu at the moment looking at the task manager. The reason I ask though is because I found that it has stopped working and quit a couple of times for me, not the FAH client that continues to run fine but just the viewer? Anyone else here have an issue with the 3d viewer crashing?

I never touch the viewer as it hurts PPD. I think most of us think alike on this issue.

yeah i was just having it running when i was sitting there because i liked the look of it, but as you said i noticed it was taking 6%+ of cpu so I will probably leave it off most of the time. another thing I found using up a surprising amount of the cpu was the screen saver which wasn't even running in the foreground at the time but i guess it must have not stopped running for some reason when i started using the computer today and kept running the process in the background. not really sure what happened there.
