Asus has just revealed the world’s first external video card for laptop computers at CES Unveiled in Las Vegas. The XG Station is connected via Express Card also featuring USB 2.0 and Dolby digital headphone jack support. On the XG Station itself it displays system master volume, GPU clock speed, current GPU temperature, FPS (frames per second), and a GPU fan indicator. Asus is expecting to release the XG Station with a EN7900GS graphics card in the Q2 of 2007, no word on the final price yet… but be sure to check up throughout the remainder of CES.

anyway, thanks for the information, i'm sure it will succeed and lot of people will buy it.

Worked fine here, and if it can compete with internal ones this may be an fantastic idea.

I get paraniod as hell when handling my video card, it being the most expensive, unprotected bit of my machine.

use IE, doesnt work on FIRE FOX for me

that is a perfect idea for a cheaper laptop, then just get one of those

(3rd time I clicked refresh it came up)

How bizarre, it`s a kewl idea - I mean u can use u`r laptop for work/college/whatever, and when u get home u plug it into this, which is plugged into u`r 20-odd inch monitor, usb keyboard, mouse, plug in the lan - and away u go. No big black box. Firewire drive bay thingy.. it goes on.

First? what about the Quadro Plex?

I was going to mention that till I read the article. This is the first external card made specifically for laptops, and I'm assuming for gaming needs. The Quadro was made specifically for workstations

Do you think going to higher cards will give improved performance, or will it just get capped at a certain point?

I think its gay, if i wanna game on a laptop i want to be able to carry it where i please. Isnt that the whole point? If your hooking it up to an external monitor then just get a damn desktop sheesh.

Some people can't afford both and this could be a viable option for them to be able to game from their laptops at a fraction of the price of a real gaming rig or a fraction of the cost of a true mobile gaming lappy. I think the idea is definately good, but the interface could be improved upon. Asus could technically just build their own connector/port that it would plug in to and link it directly to a PCI-e x8 or x16 lane.

If I had an Asus laptop this would interest the hell out of me.

Yea, then for this one product your limited to only being able to get one brand of laptop. I figure it like this. You set your priorities. If you want to game, get a desktop. If you want a laptop for college get a laptop. Dont try to do both unless you have money. Yes, makes sense. But seriously, at the price this is probably gonna be your better off getting a nice gaming desktop then getting a cheap laptop from Wal Mart to do your college stuff on.

This will just kinda be a pleasant surprise for Asus lappy owners that had no idea that Asus was working on this, and might give them a nice little upgrade path. I think the idea is good, but if you have the money you should obviously not be gaming on a lappy.
