New DSL standard <VDSL2> announced

An international standards group has approved a new DSL standard that it says will increase the technology's upstream and downstream speeds to as much as 100 megabits per second -- 10 times faster than the fastest DSL now offered by carriers.

The Geneva, Switzerland-based International Telecommunications Union (ITU) approved the standard for Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line 2 (VDSL2) last week, but it might be years before most consumers see it on their doorstep.

According to a statement by the ITU, its recommendations will boost the competitive stance of DSL providers by allowing them to offer services such as high-definition TV (HDTV), video on demand programming, video conferencing, high-speed Internet access and advanced voice services like voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) -- all over standard copper telephone lines.

Regardless, that's a nice d/l speed. But I just want internet2 at 6.7 Gb/s :D

as if your computer could take that ... im sure it would be effective over a network but like one computer?? and isnt that what we call T1 or T3?

No, T1 is 1.5 Mb/s up and 1.5 Mb/s down.

T3 is.. I have no idea.

Internet2 is way faster than either.. WAY faster :D

what would be thepoint of having that in your home because your computer would no way have the ability to cope with that much bandwidth coming through soo i think it would be a waste mabye good for companies withlike 200+ computers there

Here is a link to the homepage of Internet2...enjoy :) http://www.internet2.edu/

T1 speed is as Austin stated 1.5mb/s, but T3 is in the vicinity of 45mb/s or fractional T3 speed (starting at 3Mbps). T3 is usually the fat pipe that ISP's use...the lucky buggers. :D

No T1 and T3 are ancient broadband technologies which are still highly overpriced... Most cable and DSL carriers are faster than T1 and are nearing T3 speeds.

Fastest current connection available today is OC-192 which is 10 gigabits / sec and only costs a shy $50,000+ a month :D hehe
