New CPU

I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU (and motherboard). I currently have an intel i7 2600 and was thinking about getting a Haswell 4770k. To anyone's knowledge, is this a worth while upgrade and what kind gains can I expect in performance? It wouldn't be so much of an issue if I didn't have to also replace the motherboard and possibly the memory too.

First post so go easy

Thanks in advance for any help!

My personal opinion is that it's not worthwhile just yet, particularly if you're just a gamer. I have a 2500K so similar league and same gen as you and I am considering Broadwell or skylake as my next upgrade but not Haswell.

If you're looking to perform better in games a graphics card is the way to go as you will not be bottle necking in the slightest with an i7 2600 imo

First of all welcome to the forums :)

Secondly:
- What do you use your PC for?
- Do you have spare cash for the upgrade?

Cause for gaming, there isn't going to be a whole lot of difference. The biggest boost might actually come from the PCI-E 3.0 support instead of the CPU upgrade. Obviously it will help a little but I'd personally say that it's not reaaally worth the money.

What are the rest of the specs? Maybe there's something else you could upgrade for better performance?

Thanks for the info guys. This is what I was thinking. From what I've read the increase from the previous gen isn't that great so I think I'll wait and see what comes out in the future.

Yes, I mainly use it for gaming.

My current spec is:
Intel i7 2600
Asus Maximus gene-z/gen3
Evga Nvidia GTX780
16gb DDR3 1600
120gb SSD

Just keep your system, i have been on the 2500k and then the 3770k and now the 3930k, on the game site i can't see any point to go higher on your system. And will say that your gaming setup is nice in specs :D

You would get no benefit whatsoever in gaming. Your cpu has enough performance to not bottleneck your gpu and will be more than enough for gaming. Difference between pcie 2 and pcie3 will not be noticeable. Maybe 1 or 2 fps.

I agree with everybody here. For gaming, a 2600K is still a very capable chip. Youd be better off investing in a better GPU if youre running an older video card as that would give you a lot better increase in performance.

According to CPU Benchmark, the difference in CPU performance at stock speed is about 25%. Now, take it as you will, but that is a big-ish performance boost. But, the only issue is that synthetic benchmarks don't tell the same story as actual gaming.
So, from a gaming perspective, you might only see a half a dozen frames more (depending on how CPU dependent the game is).

Now, whether or not you should upgrade is a different story. Do you have the money to spare? Are you looking for something that's more future proof (as Intel is likely to use the same socket based on what they've done in the past)?
