New car advice?

So I passed my test recently and It is time to buy a new car. I have set a budget of £5000, And am hoping you guys can suggest what I get :)

I am obviously going to be getting a used car, and I am willing to get an older one (2003 onwards) as I would like to get a nice one, not just a corsa or a focus, not that they arn't nice, I just don't want to get something simple.

So far I have been looking at the Nissan 350Z and the Honda S2000

So any suggestions?

Thanks :)

a) congratulations! - I have yet to bloody pass mine (test kinda soon, so let's hope third time's a charm)

b) holy insurance premiums batman. A 350Z?! I'm pretty sure the insurance on that would be a fair bit over £10k/year.

Haha, completely right...

I doubt anyone will even insure you. After a year of driving for myself, insurance for a 1999 Nissan Skyline was £35k...

Get a couple of years no claims before even thinking of something with an engine over a 1.2

I really should have explained in the OP, basically I will be buying the car but as a kind of present to my dad who isn't very well he will be having it for the first 1-2 years. I will be driving around in his 1.2 Corsa :P Then after I get the No claims up I will be taking the car off of him. I have found deals as cheap as 5k for a 350z, and I assume other cars that are less than 3.5L could be even cheaper

I'll throw in an agreement for no 350Z or s2000 because insurance will be absolutely crippling for you. Bro is looking at a group 1 insurance car for when he passes his test and even that is going to run up to over a grand with my parents bother named on his insurance. Same car i'm £300 with parents on the insurance and that's 3 years motoring (but no true no-claims as I wasn't the policy holder).

While I'm not able to give great advice on what cars to get, I can say that you need to really figure out your costs. Buying used, particularly quite old, high mileage cars can be a hell of a gamble because these cars are not as good when it comes to safety, cost more to fuel and tax, maybe to insure and are more likely to have something go wrong. Working it out I was cheaper over 1 year and 3 years buying a brand new car on a PCP deal that included my first 3 services than I was to buy a £3000 car. All in over the life of the car it will probably end up costing about £5500 and I have no hassles regarding insurance costs.
Car is a Seat Mii 1.0 SE. Doesn't exactly set the world alight but as a first car it is pretty damm good. Nothing close to what you are after though but it gives you something to think about.

EDIT:

The problem is that 3.5L engine and the what 200+bhp. Nowhere is going to be happy insuring you for that car any time in your first 3-5 years and many might flat out refuse to do it regardless of age.

I have been looking at the Mazda MX-5, cracking car that can be had for pretty cheap and the insurance isn't actually that bad, about £3000, and that's with me having only passed my test a few months ago and no no claims and all that.

Maybe a Vauxhall Astra 2007, they cost about £1k to insure as a new driver and you can get one for £3k.

I had a quick look on Autotrader, and this may be a good shout, It's no, 350z or MX-5 but the insurance is mega cheap and it's a lot newer than the other cars I have been looking at.

Even after 2 years of no claims, it'll still be ridiculous. You won't get a quote under about £3000 for one until you're over 21.

All of this is also dependent on you going for 2 years without making a claim don't forget.

Also, you're forgetting fuel consumption entirely. I have a 2009 KA, which is one of the cheapest cars to insure, and run, and even that costs £50 or so in fuel every 2 weeks - obviously depending on how much it's used...

There's absolutely no point in thinking of getting a cool car until you're at least 21 and have a decent job.

If you get something old - like from 2003 as you've suggested, you'll just end up having to pay hundreds within a year for repairs. It'll need a new parts like a cambelt and brake pads - not that they're that expensive, but it all adds up unnecessarily...

Get something newer - if you've got £5000 to spend, get something from 2009. They'll have been under warranty generally for the last 3 years and so had regular services, and then traded in once that has expired. Therefore it's more likely to be reliable.
Look at Fiestas, Corsas, Polos, Kas, Clios. Build up your no claims, sell it on after a year or so and change it - that way you won't lose as much in depreciation, and insurance will stay low.
For example, this year my Ka is £1100 to insure, next year after a year of no claims that goes down to £600. Absolutely no point in wasting money unnecessarily on insurance. Annoyingly - I was insured for 9 months previously, but it doesn't count for anything unless you have a year...

Tbh, I'd be scared on the roads if 17-20 year olds could afford to drive round in muscle cars...

I will chime in on this when I get back later as I do not have time right now. Don't worry it wont be all bad.

Indeed. Any of the cars mentioned here aren't exactly going to be cheap to run. I can't imagine what the petrol bill for something like a 350Z is going to be. Even the MX-5 has a 1.8l engine, also having a convertible in the UK probably isn't the best idea given the weather.

@seumasbeathan
You can be one of those guys you see flying past everybody, I just hope you like to see your whole salary coming out of the exhaust. :p

Edited out the bits that weren't key but honestly, +1 for this entire post all day long.

ill give you a little insight into car insurance seamus, i have a Seat Leon FR diesel, its about 170 bhp on a 59 plate, im 23, 6 years no claims, no points, and i have police driving courses (advanced driving), i still look at £850 a year, my brother is a year younger in the same boat minus police driving, almost double that. i have a friend who is jap mad, hes 2 years older than myself and his 350z set him back 3500 in insurance, your better off waiting till your mid-20s imho

Mocked up some details on my car with no years no claims, full comp, kept in a garage, 5000 annual mileage etc, i think youll be surprised mate, i was a bit shocked, basically one person would be willing to insure you.

insurance. i love insurance. i bought a new scirocco when i was 22. the insurance for the 1.4 tsi verison with one year good driver discount was 1400 with my mum on the policy to bring it down from over 2k. the next year the insurance went up to 1500 so i said screw it. i sold the thing and got a new land rover discovery. i have 2 years ncd and the insurance is 900 . which is quite acceptable. i want to get myself a weekend warrior like a type r, 350z,s15,supra, but the insurance is at the very least 4k even with my discounts and i am 25 in a few weeks. put the idea out of your head mate. it will only cause heartache. wait till you are 25 or so before you even start thinking about it. i have 5 years ncd on my motorbike but a 600cc supersport is still 2k insurance. go for an old golf gttdi. nippy and nice wagons

tbh with ya mate its the kind of car that has a big impact as well. ive got a 2 litre petrol focus estate. im 24 with no ncd and im paying £700 a year. if i change that to a 2 litre golf gti its well over a grand because they car is classed as a 'boy racer' car.
try havin a look at things like bmw 320 or 325 or an equivalent mercedes or audi. due to being classed as 'family' cars they insurance should be cheaper

There's also more to insurance than just ncb and age, job status, owning your own house and off road parking affect it quite a bit.
