New build idea - acceptable?

After many months of scraping through a weekend job and saving student finance money, I've finally found enough money to build a new computer!

Please tell me if there are any changes you would make around the same price (using Scan, if you can):

Case: Bequiet Base 800 (won in a competition)

Ram: Corsair vengeance 8gb 1600mhz (recycling from old build - ram is so expensive now). Does it matter that it is nearly 4 years old?!

CPU: i5-4690k - £183.79

CPU cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo - £25.34

Thermal paste: Artic MX-4 - £5.39

Mobo: Asus z97-A - £113.96

GPU: MSI GTX 970 - £293.96

SSD: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO - £94.61

HDD: 1TB WD Black - £55.91

PSU: XFX XTR 650W - £79.98 (made by Seasonic, so should be okay?)

Total: £852.94

I'm willing to go up to near £1000, if it will make such a difference.

Thank you in advance!

seems pretty good to me. Congrats on winning the case. You might want to get a bigger ssd if you can afford it but seems solid nonetheless.

Thank you. I might up it to a 500gb, then.

So, do you think that my RAM will last another 4 years? I remember buying mine at £40; current prices make my eyes water!

Bigger SSD for what scenario?... just wondering here, since if it's mainly for gaming, depending on how much the games he plays takes in storage, a big one isn't needed. Unless he can afford it of course.

As an example, I have the same SSD that you mentioned in the OP and and I still have around 160GB left, after installing OS, photoshop, sony vegas, BF3 & 4 etc etc.

Nothing to brag here about, just wondering what you had in mind regarding a bigger SSD? :)

Thanks for letting me share and good luck with the build! - Be sure to post a build log if you can, always fun to watch people put togheter their PCs :)

Prices went up because the market was flooded with too many people producing DDR3 memory and not enough people to buy it.. but that's changed now.
No one can say how long it will last. That's mainly up to Intel and to less of an extent, AMD. If Intel moves to DDR4 it'll pretty much turn obsolete. No news yet on DDR4 being on the next broadwell boards.

If you have the spare budget it's always best to get a bigger ssd... Get a 1TB if you can lol

For every scenario.

If the mechanical hard drive is only going to be used for storage and file access, then I would go for the WD green, or even a seagate drive (poss put the difference in cost into a bigger drive) as for loading up your college / uni work, it wont make any real difference in times, it will only really be noticeable in games

I game frequently, so I'll be needing the extra speed that the black can provide. I might somehow re-purpose my current WD blue 500gb for uni work (making sure to back-up data, of course).

Haha, I will! Although, going by the components I'm picking, it is going to end up being a really ugly duckling! ;)

I'll leave it for now, then. Hopefully prices decrease sooner or later.

500gb ssds tend to have better read/write performance and bigger space is always better :)

Pretty good, I would definitely suggest some watercooling like the venerable Swfitech H220-X or if it will fit your case the Swiftech H240-X. Cheapest option there and pretty adequate in terms of being upgrade-able, and as a Kit it's much cheaper compared to the other Kits I've seen for watercooling.
