ok, so i went out and got a new athlon 64 3500+ (venice) :yumyum: . however i noticed that there are two small dents down the right hand side of the processor...since i have never bought a new processor before i am not sure what to expect...will it have any performance impact? do most/all amd processors have these. i may seem paranoid but hey you can never be too carefull. thankyou again for your help. :worship: :) :p

unfortunatley no...i do not own a camera...i know that this makes it much harder to give me an answer...so i will discribe it in more detail.

ok at the top (on the silver part) right hand side of the processor there are two small dents right on the very edge of the processor...they are about the width of a sewing needle (best example i could think of lol). the actual processor is not bent or dented other than these two small dents. if you look along the top of the processor you can see that the silver surface has been raised about half a mm at the dents.

if there is anything else you would like me to discribe just ask. thankyou :)

Well I would say that it would be fine. That's only the IHS and not the actual core.

If you're concerned about the contact area you can lap the processor :)

Yeah, you'd definately need to lap (sand down) the top of the IHS to make proper contact with your heatsink - otherwise you are going to get some crazy high temperatures.

Can you not return the chip?

Id say try it first. Run as many dam tests as you can think of. If the cpu works fine lap it. If not RMA it.

agree with Ham on this.

ifyou lap it now and it doesnt work later on you stand there with a nice keychain as the warranty is voided by the lapping.

I think the little dents your talking about came from the machine that places the IHS on the core for finial assembly, my new chip HAD them as well. They did effect the temps on mine at all, but I went ahead and lapped it anyway after stressing it for a few days. The load temps didn't drop much after the lapping, maybe a few C at stock settings.

As long as the dents aren't in the middle of the IHS since that is wher the core is you should be fine. My 3000+ had a make mark on the edge of the IHS and it worked fine.

Sigh, why lap when you can pop :D.

lol. hes right if your temps are affected and you dont want to replace it, pop the ihs off and you will get a big temperature drop, especially if you have a defected IHS.

ok thankyou, that makes me feel alot better. as i said i have never bought a new in box processor before so i was not sure if this was serious. i think i will just try to replace it when i go back to get my video card
