New 2 C2D 4 I perhaps

Hello, sorry to ask a n00bish question, but I'm toying with swapping out my present S939 x2 4200 base and looking into a C2D base setup. My existing x1950 Pro would remain and the watercooling too, if I just change my CPU block bracket.

Being a little budget conscious, I'm thinking of an Abit IP35-E (about £60) and a C2D E4300 (£70ish, or E4400 for a smidge more), HDD isn't important but I've a question regarding RAM. DDR2 has dropped price appreciably, so for about £60, there's bargains. I'm hoping to O/C it, as the 4300 is rated as clocking well and 3GHz is plausible. Would CAS5 TwinX be OK? Is there better RAM, without upping the cost too much?

Another question, am I going to see that much benefit from replacing the x2 at 2.5GHz with the DDR2/C2D setup? There's no real urge to replace apart from idle curiosity and a little boredom.

Thanks for your patience, as you were.

I would recommend that RAM too - my mate's been eyeing it up for a few days now, its just dropped from 52 pounds to 46 pounds so I think the time is ripe to pounce ;)

As for the upgrade, I think it's definitely worth it :)

Oh yeah and if you had £60 aside for RAM and you pick that up at just under £50 then the extra tenner can go towards the E4400

I use the ip35-e i love it running my e6600@3600 no problems if i had water i could hit 3800 or more. 450x8 fsb for me right now i ever jump to water i probly run it at 470-480x8. Id pass on the 4xx series and try to get one of new G0 stepping cpus they have a higher temp and clock better if you can save up enugh money.

It finally all arrived today, so I swapped the mobo over and replaced all the WC stuff.

Refused to POST at first, then I found that increasing the RAM voltage to 2.2v (as written on the RAM) solved the boot issues.

So now I'm replacing all my apps and then I'll look at turning up the O/C a little.

What did you go for in the end?

Ok, so now I've got the 4400 at 3GHz, 300FSB (50C at full whack, stock volts) and the RAM at 450 (2.2v) on a 2:3 divider.

Next step?

Bump up the volts on the cpu a tad and try for more :)

So, running orthos on blend to stress the RAM and CPU, CoreTemp shows both cores about the 50-51C mark, dropping off to 35ish when idling. Is that OK, given they're under water, even if the AS5 hasn't had time to go off properly?

No apparently stability problems, on Vista business.
