Netflix and Wi-Fi

Evening all,

I've recently got Netflix back for my parents which they watch through Apple TV, it's set to run at 1080 and was smooth as butter on Sky Broadband, now I'm on Sky Fibre it buffers a lot, I've just been updating apps on my phone whilst Netflix was on and a 20mb download was usually seconds, just then it was 1-2mins! Is there just not enough Wi-Fi bandwidth available?

Wi-Fi is fine, this seems silly.

What speed you got on the fibre? What speed/type wifi does the router have etc?

I ran speed test on my Wi-Fi three times in half an hour and it was between 14 and almost 17. I think 8 upload and a 45-54ms ping.

My actual fibre speeds are (this was what I tested it at when it was put in, speeds may be a bit quicker now after the ten day smooth out process), 37.66 download, 9.53 upload and a 19ms ping.

the fuck is the ten day smoothout process? NEVER heard of that one before..

FYI I believe the slowest wifi is 54MBps so you're covered.

The part were they say over the next ten days we will try different speeds on your line to find the fastest stable speed haha. :) I'm sure I've tested it since and it's a bit faster but that's the last score I posted on OC3D the day I got it.

I can't understand why Netflix is hogging the Wi-Fi, it never used too. :S

if it's fibre it goes as fast as it goes.. I've never heard of them screwing around with it like that. At least not with Virgin?

They probably don't they probably just say that (in my welcome pack) just to make you feel loved.

Yeah got the new Sky Fibre router, actual Ethernet connection is spot on as well as the Wi-Fi but Netflix buffers a few times throughout a movie (only seconds) but then drops the image quality for a few minutes, it's really peeing my parents off though and it means I have to stay away from the Internet during the course!

BT 'apparently' did the same with me when I was on infinity 76mb. Never really noticed but back then I had two jobs so was never really home.

The wireless can't be crap because until weekend it was fine and I got fibre and the router in December. I unplugged it before for a minute remembering occasionally with TalkTalk I had too and was ten minutes into TTL's 1500i review on my phone then constant buffering. What's going on, it's driving me nuts!

Use the Android app called WiFi analyzer and see how clear the channel is. You might be suffering from interference.

Cheers mate I'll have a look.

Edit: It's reading about 44 (dbm was it?) I don't know if that's good?

can you do a speedtest on your phone? (while on wifi) to make sure?

I have always had major issues with the routers that the cable company gives you... thats why i put it in bridge mode and get a real one. They will get the cheapest ones they can to save money.

I may have mis read what the analyser app does, I got 44 but after my brother in law explaining it, I noticed that in my loop covering channels, 1,2,3 another Sky network was smack bang in the middle of mine, just not up to 44dbm, more like half, sometimes disappearing altogether.

Is it worth changing my Wi-Fi channels? It's not something I want to have to do though really, just annoying that it's just happened to be slower over the last few days.

Edit: Yeah I did a speedtest dude, it was between 14-16MBps, 8MBps upload and 32-55ms ping. (Wi-Fi connection).

The app should have a suggested channel with less interference at the top. Changing your channel is real easy - usually just a drop down box on the wireless settings.

Depending on your local infrastructure sometimes during peak times your speeds may decrease, that happens on all providers as far as I'm aware.

I used to get 1-5Mbit/s during evenings until they fixed it in my area.

I'm sure with fibre it says no slow downs during peak times. I tested ten mins later and got 39mbps. Sky need to sort it. I've emailed them.
