Need help understanding physics joke

On the latest episode of Big Bang Theory, Sheldon says the following joke, but I don't understand the Physics behind it.

Sheldon:
Knock-knock.

Leonard:
Who's there?

Sheldon:
Interrupting physicist.

Leonard:
Interrupting physicist--

Sheldon:
Muon!

I have strong interest in Physics but I lack to see what a muon has to do with an interrupting physicist.

Google has no answers.

Cheers

muon sounds like moron

I've had a brainwave. I don't think it has any technical physics background to it, I think it just means a physicist shouting out something random to do with physics. Derp.

Isn't Lenord a physicist?

That would make sense if he did say moron and not muon, as he would be interrupting Lenord the physicist.

Hmm, pretty sure he says muon and Sheldon is playing the part of the interrupting physicist.

I was trying to make a connection in Physics, like in this joke.

Knock knock

Who's there?

Interrupting coefficient of friction

Interrupting coeff-

Mu!

As mu is the coefficient of friction.

I was over thinking it, I reckon.

Thanks for the replies though

the sound Sheldon made was his stupid laugh not a word or anything and yeah he was interrupting Leonard

well maybe I heard it wrong but thats how I interpreted it. But in reality does it matter?? could be the shows writers just pulled it from their arse in attempt to make you go ?????????

One thing I learnt in physics in relation to jokes, via our lecturer, is this: a """joke""" (notice the heavy quotation marks), will be hinted at by the lecturer, in a kind of passing way. A small group of the real pocket-pen-protector types will kinda get it (welll acknowledge the attempt), followed shortly by those who would want to appear that they got it to not seem stupid, and the majority of the theatre will just look at each other with a WTeF! look on their faces. Biggest joke being the chatting about it afterwards.

.. all encompassed by the lecturer doing one of those weird-ass laughs involving sniffing and grunting, whilst stroking a beard and connecting with those who initially acknowledged the attempt.

True story.

It was more to do with the fact that the Big Bang Theory jokes usually do have a physics understanding yet this one didn't, and I was wondering what I was missing. That was all.

Definitely some over-thinking going on. This joke is meant to be understood by the masses of viewers with little-to-no physics background. It's not necessary to understand exactly what muons are, just that they are studied by physicists. Muon sounds like Moo. The muon joke is only funny in that it sounds like the punchline of this widely known joke:

The "Interupting Cow joke is a knock knock joke:

a. Knock-knock

b. Who's there?

a. The interrupting cow

b. The interru-

a. MOOOOO!
