Need help picking parts for new gamer PC

Hi folks,
my brother is in need of a new gamer PC. He only needs the PC (he has monitor etc. himself). It does not need OS, and chassis is preferred to be as quiet as possible (window not a must).

He wanna try not spend more than £1350 (plus/minus some). While im not from UK we more or less have similar prices where I live, so I'll just find the parts on a national website myself, I basically just need a list of parts.

What monitor does he have (resolution) and what games does he play / want to use it for?

He has a BenQ 1080p, it also has 120hz but he doesn't even understand what that means so having constant 120fps is not a must.

I dont think there are any specific games. Right now he has an i7-920 and GTX275, so he basically wants a PC that can last for at least a couple of years, and where he doesn't have to worry about in-game settings (basically wants to be able to slide it all up as high as possible).

Thanks for the list. So its not worth the money to go with the 5xxxk processors, or wait for the new 6xxxk ones in August? (if we forget the budget for a second).

Here's what I came up with based on your list....
- i5-4690k
- Noctua NH-D15
- Asus Z97 Pro Gamer
- HyperX Fury DDR3 1866MHz (they didn't have G.Skill)
- 500GB SSD (he prefers to have it all on one; no hybrid)
- Asus 980 (Strix ftw???)
- Fractal R5
In regards to PSU, would he need a bigger one for sli? (so he can add a 2nd card later).

Price here: £1260. I could probs find cheaper RAMs though (these cost £110, just picked randomly tbh).

edit: woops, I forgot adding PSU. The £1260 is without PSU, so I guess I might go over budget a smidge.
edit2: Oh, and the ram I picked are 16GB, hence the price. Is 8 enough these days?

If you whanted SLI you will whant a bigger psu maybe a 750-800w just to give breathing room Sli cards you are not realy going to need for 1080p gameing + haveing 2 cards is more noise.
And yes the Strix card is allso a good card and the gigabyte gtx 980 g1

Alright, adding an RM850 and it hits about £15-20 over budget. Although I could lower it if I only get 8GB ram for him, but is that really enough?

8gbs is fine for gameing + he can just add anuther set in at a later date if he realy whanted to.

Just drop the PSU down to a RM750 or even RM650, bear in mind that furmark is an absolute worst case scenario in terms of power consumtion, in games a dual 980 rig should pull about 450w.
RM series PSU stay very quiet even under heavier loads

Alright, sounds good. And theres no reason to wait for Skylake CPUs, or?

I cant realy speculate on Skylake yet as its not out but i am not expecting much more perfomance over the current gen i5's its going to be more about makeing them use less power.

Should take a look at the MSI 390x Gaming card. Can probably be found for cheaper and it trades blows with the 980. Also for the same amount(or less) money you basically get a whole 4GB of extra vram.

TTL reviewed this a few days ago and it got a rave review from him. Certainly deserves a look!

I'd watch the video first. It captures Tom's excitement more than text will.

I've come up with a 4690k+980ti build and 5820k+980 build (both same price).
So whats better? The 980ti or the more "future proof" 5820k?

Heres the list of hardware:
4690k build
5820k build

Would love your advice. :)

The 4690k set up is going to be the better gameing ring haveing a better video card
and the 5820k rig is going to be the better 'workstation' but saying that if you can get both of these rigs in your budget thay are both realy good rigs droping the cooling down to the 212 evo will give you less overclocking room but is still good for mild overclock's (considering you whant to keep the pc quiet)

Im not only looking at whats best for gaming (I realize the TI build is), but im also wondering about "future proofing". Maybe in the long run its better to get 5820k, and replace GPU when its "old" yet still have quite an up-to-date mobo/cpu/ram?
