Need help picking parts for an upgrade

So I feel that is about that time to upgrade my computer and finally make the switch to the conroe from my AMD 3500+. I will be using the computer for gaming, watching movies, burning movies/cd's, surfing the net and all that good stuff. I would really like to get parts that will put me on top of the heap and not require me to upgrade when the new games come out. I will be gaming on my 22" dell @ 1680x1050. Not to mention I will be folding 24/7 for OC3D lol

Now I have a very slight idea on what I would like, but with so many choices I don't know what to do lol. One of the biggest problems I'm having is deciding on a motherboard. Which chipset?

Basically to sum that all up ^ I would like something super fast

Don't worry about money atm, I will deal with that after

Processor - I would like to get a new conroe

RAM - As close as I can come to the fastest my mobo will allow. I want to be using 2GB

Video Card - 8800 series without a doubt, more than likely the GTX

power supply - I know I will need some real juice here

Sound Card - X-fi fatal1ty???

Maybe another hard drive

As always, thanks for the help :worship:

yea maybe....but i wanna upgrade :) I'm going to be going to university next year and I would like to upgrade my PC one last time before I go. After this upgrade, all funds are going into my first year

Depends on what you can afford.

If you aren't rolling in it then get an 8800 and mebbe a PSU

If not then get the whole shebang:

e6600

abit IN9

2-4gb PC6400 and above

8800gts/gtx

New PSU

processor: E6600 IMO

mainboard: DFI (not sure of model, but the lanparty, not the infinity)

ram: G.Skill have always been good, and OCZ

Video: OCZ 8800GTX

PSU: Somthing either Tagan or Enermax

Soundcard sounds nice :D

750Gb seagate?

go all out then, dual 8800 GTX's, quad cpu, 2g 800mhz or higher, quad 74g raptors in 0, xfi sound card, somewhat joking but then again not really

I don't really want SLI, but I have enough cash to upgrade it all so that's what my plan is. I wouldn't need the quad raptors either

Ye raptors are a waste of cash unless you have money to burn. Perhaps a couple of Hitachi or Seagates in RAID 0?

SLI is a waste of time

So I know you've all recommended the E6600, is there a big difference with going to the E6700, or the X6800? Are the 680i chipsets still having troubles?

Well the E6700's are deffo easier to OC imo (10x multi ftw :D)

The IN9 is solid and stable and a very decent clocker, I'd deffo recommend. Not had any issues yet :)

everything looks good mate, but why spend that little extra on a card that is endorsed by fatality, when you can get the same card less his branding for about £20 cheaper, his name wont make it sound any better. ( i think) :p

Ye me buying the fatal1ty is by no means showing my support for him, I am simply thinking about it because I know kemp has one and says it is great for gaming. I'm using onboard audio atm, so anything would probably make a big difference

btw, has anyone had any experience with the asus striker extreme or the asus commando? I know that weihk has the commando in his recent build

I got the Fatal1ty for the X-Ram onboard and the front panel IO. Of course if you don't need the front IO like I do then a normal Xtreme Music will be ok

in all honesty.

Cpu - 6700

Ram - 2g (pick ur choice)

Mobo - 680i (is my pick h/e im sure some ppl will debate otherwise)

GPU - 8800 GTX

HD - Hitachi Deskstars 250+ raid 0, maybe a 36g raptor for OS

Soundcard - Xfi

Case - ur pick

PSU - 600+ with high 12v rails i prefer OCZ/Enermax/Hyper

if ur going to college id stay with air never know what problems u might run into

Ok as for the mobo,

The IN9 seems like an awesome choice of a board but is pretty expensive at $429.99.

Now I read the OC3D review on the Abit AW9D max board and it seems like it performs very well also. It is priced at $271.32.

Would you still go with the IN9? Or do you think the AW9D is a better idea.

Also for the RAM which brand should I be looking at?

And is the 600+ enough to power all of these components? I'll probably look at what PCP+C has to offer.

AW9D is my vote, ur better off spending that extra 200 on a better cpu or higher speed ram. 600 should be enough, iv seen someone use a 300w in a shuttle with a 8800gtx, just high in amps

Ye that extra 200 bucks could be used to go from the E6600 to the E6700. Unless someone says that the AW9D isn't as good as the IN9.

When I find a decent psu, i'll post it here just to be sure.

So any idea on the brand of RAM I should go with?

Hmm.. I'm thinking..

E6600/E6700 or Xeon 3060/3070

G.Skill 2GBHZ DDR2-800

P5B Deluxe or Intel XBX2

XFX or eVGA 8800GTX

Corsair HX620w, Enermax Infiniti, OCZ GXS 700w

haha totally threw me for a loop there with the P5B deluxe or the intel xbx2. Why do you recommend these?

And as for the psu, those 3 you recommended seem to be the best for what I need
