hey guys.

ive just bought a dell laptop with a dual core intel processor running at 1.73 GHz a peice and a mint geforce gfx card, the name of which i have forgotten!

mmy problem is i bought this laptop not only to do work but to obviously game, as it is a lot better than my desktop.

my problem is it wont run games like battlefield 2 and battle for middle earth (both EA games). initially i thought it was vista home premium which i have pre-installed, but i realised that bf2 was supposed to work on vista...:p

then i looked at my chipsets, and my display adaptor, a mobile intel 945GM express chipset display adaptor is not compatible with bf2. i need to know where i can get drivers to sort this problem, and if worse comes to worse, where i can buy a new laptop and bf2 compatible intel display adaptor chipset, because im clueless about these things, and the extent of my knowledge only stretches as far as what gfx cards to buy....

help is much appreciated.

thanks, pete

On some recent laptops, you can actually upgrade the graphics card as the mobo's have a MXM header. (like the iMac etc)

Might be worth contacting dell I guess, but as the XPS systems come with intel onboard & nvidia graphcis I'm guessing it should probably have this feature on the mobo (unless they use different mobo's)

The intel GPU should support directx I would've thought but I doubt it would run BF2 that well :)

The nvidia card should be pretty good, not sure about vista & drivers tho

I thought you were running on the intel onboard graphics from what you said about the chipset etc  :D

Well if I were you and I had just bought the laptop I would return it and get a different one. That GPU will not run any of todays games at anything worth playing. Dell have a 90 day money back guarantee, I suggest you use it

Tough love I know, but that's the truth I'm afraid

I know for a fact that if you get a Dell XPS M1710, even the cheapest one comes with a 7900GS which will play bf2 no problem :) I know the dell xps that comes with a 7950GTX scores approx 5500 in 3D Mark06. But they aren't cheap.

This thread has successfully confused the slats out of me. It sounds like you are running onboard gfx from what you have said it is displaying in your properties yet you say you bought it with a geforce? It's either one or the other...

Also, why are you people assuming he has an XPS? He never stated which model he had. He could very easily have an Inspiron with onboard gfx, maybe Dell mis configured the order?

We need more information from the OP.

I never stated he had a XPS I think. I was simply sugesting if he returns his laptop, he should get a xps if he intends to game. I need to be a bit clearer in my post :(

Pretty much if you want to game you need something from that page. I have the Inspiron 9400/E1705, which gets you almost the same hardware as the XPS's for about half the price. I got this one for ~$1500:

Battlefield 2142 is generally playable on it, but it does tend to lag somewhat after awhile; not sure if it's thermal throttling or what. I still prefer to play games on my desktop. Plus the thing is a brick to lug around. Unless you're never home to use it, I'd say get a gaming desktop and a cheap laptop.
