Need antivirus

Hi

I'm looking for a powerful and lightweight (size) antivirus. might be fixing a laptop for someone and I need something that can install off a pen drive that's pre-updated (what with most that you download being extremely out of date.) the computer can't connect to the internet due to the nature of the virus, and formatting is not an option. any help would be much appreciated. would prefer a legit freeware program, but I'm sure i could get hold of a commercial one somewhere, just a few names for decent progs would help.

Thanks in advance.

As long as you are prepared to set permissions for absolutely every command windows can execute, then I'd reccomend Kaspersky. Probably the only piece of software I've ever paid for.

www.avast.com does exactly what it says on the tin. best anti virus out there, certified by microsoft.

did I mention its free?

You'd think that Microsoft certification would be enough to sink an otherwise decent product.

I've used Avast for years.. before the certification....

It's lightweight and updates itself very regularly. Has caught a few nasties trying to get into my system too.

Avast 200%

light weight, very effective, the only antivirus that has ever worked for me, got me out of a few sticky situations!

ESET/NOD32 - the best AV out there, catches pretty much every "in the wild" virus before it's even got a definition. No MS certification, which is a bonus.

After runing many AV/Malware software I find most do an adequate job, but I wanted something more than that.

I recently test drove VIPRE from Sunbelt Software and it was great. Minimal demand on resources and did not slow the PC even when running a full deep scan.

It's free to try, give it a shot.

Also agree that Kaspersky is excellent software.

Thanks,

DC Miller

Kaspersky is pretty good normally (warned me when a virus tried to download itself [wasn't on a naughty site]) but it does request your permission to run everything the first time, and if you have asus smartdoctor installed (asus alternative to riva tuner) it'll stop you're game and tell you its running.

I use AVG on most of my secondary machines, but that's not much help in this instance. I just stay away from norton.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys.

Oh, and the girl in question works at the local britax, which turned out to have come under siege from the conflicker virus. she uses the laptop at work on their network apparrantly, it's starting to look grim. anyone know if theres anything out yet that can actually remove the wee beasty? I know theres been a windows hotfix to patch the vulnerability, and i don't want to have to backup and format.
