Nathan wonders.....

Right, I'm currently 22, single and live with my mum still. I love my job, but hate the wage (i could get paid more working serving mcdonalds). I'm currently having a week off as i've been knackered for the last three months working my arse off.

Having a week off i've been able to do nothing and think, I've been getting the feeling that nothing is worth it anymore. Has anyone else been in my shoes and how you go about it?

Would really appriciate some advice.

Ta,

Nathan

Unfortunately its a case of struggling on imo.

Just find the little things that make you happy and enjoy them, enduring the other crap life throws at you.

I have had that feeling.. :(

But what I found helped alot is a change of scenary. For example: New job, New House, New people.

It all helps. You need to find something you really believe in, something to work towards.

I may only be 16... but I am working towards settling down and having a family(something about kids that just makes me feel all warm, Im sure any of the parents on here will feel the same).

So yeah, Life it all about believing. Some people believe in religions some in hobbies. ;)

My opinion on things.

I have only a loose impression of what your job is, so advising in that department is pretty limited.

I have a really good idea of a number of things I believe you`re capable of doing however.

There is in addition an awful trap to fall into. One where you can like or be comfortable in a position or job that although taxing in one way, isn`t taxing your abilities in a way that you could both benefit you financially and broaden things for you in the future. I`ve been in that trap - took close to 13 years before you wake up and smell the coffee. If your there, I hope in all honesty that you notice before I did. A 5 year temporary idea turned into a position of authority, but a struggling wage. A wage some would enjoy, but not realistic.

I`m like a pig in sheesh now, even tho my wage isn`t outstanding, it`s a whole lot more than anything I would have aspired to in my previous comfort thing. Heck I get more than the shirted managers do that are still in the place I came from.

I went through a stage of thinking the same thing, going to school but hating every minute of it and then getting home and sitting on my pc for hours. Everyone saying to me "Sam, you need to get out more" and I would just blank them. At this point I lost alot of my good friends and things were like this for atleast a year.

Then on my 16th birthday I dont know what happend but things just changed, I decided to try and get back talking to my old good mates and getting out ALOT more. Now I am rarely on my pc and enjoy life alot more, I enjoy college and have lots of new friends there too.

I think everyone goes through some sort of downfall in life and you just have to deal with it in your own way. My advice would be to go out on weekends clubbing or even just down the local and after a few beers you will soon start to mix with people.

I know I am only 16 but everyone knows how much confidence alcohol gives you.

Other than that, good luck matey and stick at it whatever happens :)

Cheers people for your comments, i know most people dont like talking about this sort of stuff, but i do believe it helps people out.

I do have a pretty good social life, so i know thats not a problem. Infact, i've started to cut my social life down as i'm trying to save money (As any of Uk'ers will know, getting onto the house market is almost impossible).

I was thinking about going abroad for a year (i think it will do me good). But i work in IT. As you know, it moves fast and i dont want to come back and find it hard to get a work.

Think i'm going to have to start scrubbing up my CV.

I know how you feel mate.

I was in a similar situation a few months ago - things were'nt looking great, I was recently single, back at home at 24, lost a contract worth £26-32K.

I was finding it hard to get up in the mornings.

I realised things stay the same unless you do something about them. So I adopted a positive outlook and got a new contract at work, met a lovely woman, and as I couldn't afford to buy a house where I live (average price here is £300K) I am sharing with a couple of mates.

I also started training again as since that punk broke my face I haven't felt like fighting (martial arts)!

Anyway, I feel much better now :)

Set small achievable goals so you can say, well at least i'm that little bit further forward...

Side note, enjoying your job is easily worth £10K imo. I don't really like my current role but it pays the bills.

You're a smart man then Nathan, you'll save more money living with your mother than renting. So you love your job but the pay is bad. You have what a hell of a lot of people yearn for....job satisfaction. Can you not renegotiate your terms?

I hope you find your way out of the forest real soon mate and chin up :)

PV :)

Tried to renegotiate my terms, he gave me 3% pay rise, works out to be £450 a year. Pathetic!

Soooo, i've been signing up to all these job sites. For my job the average wage is about £20-24k. I'm on 14k.

I know to some i may sound greedy, buts it so hard to get of you feet in this stupid country.

Sister is coming round today, i'll ask for a tad help on the CV and covering letter. Then its apply time! :)

I honestly didn`t expect u to put u`r wage out on the forum, people sometimes don`t like doing that.

Often offering u 3% (when the usual anual is probably 1.2-1.3% ) means the employer knows u`r capable and is an attempt to keep u. 3%, in all fairness, probably is the best they could do, when seen in conjunction with fellow employees across the board. Trouble here is, unless they`re really keen, 3%+ isn`t gonna happen next year, u`ll be back to 1.2-1.3. So in effect this will give u a small blip of cash b4 u`r back to how u`r thinking yesterday.

Unless u`r in a job where u can look back on a year and say to them "I`ve done this`n`that as a benefit to the company" (or they bring this up to u) u won`t be in a position to ask for regions of xK as a wage increase instead of %ages.

Still I don`t fully know u`r present job title, but again I know for a fact u`r IT minded (and have a feeling it`s what u do atm), so looking further into this sector maybe something for the future to plan. If u`ve been in a present IT position for a number of years, this can also help a CV. Practicality over paperwork.

Apart from the glossy exam results that are being branded about every year, IT heads will tell u today that there is still a great shortage in the arena. There was a published paper not so many months ago, that our boss here happened to circulate, and had come from some meetings expressing this as a concern amoungst other things.

Agencies in the IT sector are very very good. They can firstly give u placements and u can either stick to these placements on a contract basis, or employers will seek to bring u on board as a result. Lots of different avenues and situations can result from that. And it`s not like the perceived version of "temping".

Eek, I`d only agree with that if u included "as long as it`s over X amount".

Enjoying u`r work tho - pffft there`s no substitute for it. U could offer double what I`m on now to do something I don`t like and I wouldn`t take it. So u`r theory kinda works. (unless it was Random Sharpshooter with License to Kill :p I could get used to that)

I'm not that fused if people know my wage. At the end of the day, im sure it doesnt mean much to people.

I had a review and they said they were really pleased with me and couldnt of asked for anymore. Thats when i got the 3% rise. I mean it could be a case of thats all the company can afford. But i think i have to look at this in a selfish sort off way. After all, for most of us, there's only one reason why we go to work and thats money.

I'm currently working as a IT techy for a company that provides services to over 30 schools and about the same business's. So it's not the biggest company in the world.

I'm currently re-writing me CV, looking at the various job sites, there's a few that looks good.

If anyone else is looking to redo there CV, i found some great advice on monster.co.uk.

They say its best to keep you CV up to date, even if your not looking for a new job.

I understand what your saying, But for me, the wage would need to be something i can live on. At the moment i live and put some in my savings account for my pension. Not even started to look at house prospects, i even need a new car.

O well, back to the CV

In that case definately seek the IT agencies through google or summit. They specialize in these sorta positions. They are very keen to get u employed, as the deal usually is that they get a `finders fee` ;) (that doesn`t mean they cream off the top of u`r wage as u go - it means the company pays them to find u)

With regards to agencies, most are thieving

s tbh.

If the position is permanent then fine, they get a one off fee.

They will be more inclined to find you temporary contracts where they charge X amount for you per hour but pay you Y.

X is always disproportionally bigger than Y...

Ever thought about joining the forces? There are plenty of posts jobs for it savvi guys, look at the Royal Signals, or if you want a change join another unit.
