My Update Build

Morning All,

It has come time to rebuild my current rig as it is rather dated for the latest gen of games (December 2008) so I am looking to complete the rebuiled over the xmas period although I have already started buy a few parts as they were needed sooner rather than later

Just thought I could get some advise on the plans and where to go with this rebuild. Cost wise I am not looking to push the £2k mark on components. Case wise, you can see my thread under the case section although short term I buy something to tie me over.

So new parts of build that are ordered are looking like this:

  • Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD256BW)
  • XSPC RayStorm CPU WaterBlock (Intel)
  • Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 rad.
  • Mayhems Pastel - Blueberry Blue Coolant 2L
  • Prolimatech PK-3 Nano Aluminium Thermal Paste
  • 8No. Bitspower Premium G1/4" Black Sparkle High Flow 1/2" Compression Fitting (For Tygon 1/2" ID)
  • XSPC HighFlex Hose 1/2" ID, 3/4" OD, 19/12.7mm, 2m
  • Arctic Silver ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover and Surface Purifier - 60ml Kit
  • OcUK Tech Lab H2O Custom HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5
  • Mayhems Dye, Deep Blue - 10ml
  • 3No. Akasa AK-TK-02 Cable Tidy Kit

I know some people say the 1/2" ID tubing is too large but I am hoping the case will suit it and show the curves better. Will have to see once it is on but the pics I have seen online I like the larger diameter tubing.

Total towards this build is £750 so far.

Parts I am using from my current build until next parts selection. Antec 1200 case, XSPC Dual bay res/pump, Tagan BZ 1300w power supply, 2No. Samsung HDD 750GB, Asus P6T Deluxe Motherboard, i7 920 overclocked @ 3.8GHz for 24/7 runnuning, 6GB Corsair 1600mhz RAM and LG Blu-ray optical drive.

End November/early December time will be the next buy and was looking into getting new motherboard, processor and ram. My current choice based on reviews and price are currently the Intel i7-3820, ASRock X79 Extreme9 Motherboard and the Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 32GB 2133MHz Quad Channel kit which comes in is around £840

Xmas/New Year I need to consider a different PSU as the Tagan is rather dated and not modular or very economical although it will at least run the system fine in the meantime.

My thoughts here are the Seasonic 1000w 80 Platinum. It is a great piece of kit and is only 160mm long rather than the 200mm length of the Corsair 1200i. That would be around £200.

All in all the build cost would be £1790 while retaining the current Case, optical drive, hard drives and bay res/pump.

Kind Regards,

Adam

OK so further to everything that has been posted I have got to this stage.

This is on order/delivered:

  • Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD256BW)
  • XSPC RayStorm CPU WaterBlock (Intel)
  • Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 rad.
  • Mayhems Pastel - Blueberry Blue Coolant 2L
  • Prolimatech PK-3 Nano Aluminium Thermal Paste

  • Mayhems Dye, Deep Blue - 10ml
  • 3No. Akasa AK-TK-02 Cable Tidy Kit

This is what I am looking to order after discussions with some friends, thoughts/opinions?

  • Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W)
  • 2No. Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD256BW)

  • Pioneer BDR-207EBK 12x BluRay RW / 16x DVD±RW 128GB

Total Cost of this order would be £1125.07 + the £752.75 so far = £1877.82

Thoughts on the build. The 2No. SSD's will be set in Raid 0 for my music/movie files and work drawings. The pre-ordered SSD is for the OS, Games and Software.

I am using this rig as an all in one. I am playing high end games, watching blu-ray movies, completing Autodesk drawings via CAD & Revit 3D modelling etc.

Is there anything I am missing. Oh the set-up is generally run a 42" Plasma but I will be getting a 27" screen for gaming at high resolutions after xmas.

noice...
just some input. i used to use the BIX rads and they are fine rads.
fin density. @20 fins per inch, you'll need a deep static pressure fan
as well as some speed. the faster the better. so if noise is a concern, you might
look into either the HL SR-1 series (9fpi), AlphaCool UT or the XSPC. these rads
offer a lower fan speed to keep the air noise to a proper minimum.
the Stealth runs an even higher fpi in the range of 30.. so higher speed fans are
needed.. found that one out on my own swapping out rads and finding higher
system temps on 1400rpm speeds.. 2500rpm and the temps came down, but
the noise was unruley.. so now its SR1, UT/XT, or RX rads for me.

Thanks bud.

I am not too worried about noise as I am using it with Monitor Audio RX8 bi-amped front towers and RX Centre powered from a Pioneer 919AH oh and not forgetting the Monitor Audio RX12 sub.

I will also be sitting around 6ft from the PC so hopefully the sound of any fans I choose should be drowned out while playing my favourite games or watching movies.

At the moment the fans are going to have to remain as the Antec Tricolour 120mm 3 fans. They seem to push some descent air and I can't hear them on full chat but I know they are not that great.

I will in the end upgrade both fan and the rad but not till I can get another case sorted. I haven't decided on that. I have one that I am working on but this is likely to take a few months so need something to tie me over till then and am likely going to go for a triple rad then.

Probably use an SR1 model.

Kind Regards,

Adam

Have had to switch out the RAD as Antec stated that they could not support this radiator due to the edge distance of the holes fouling the case.

Fortunately the EK CoolStream Radiator XT 240 radiator will fit so have switched to that. Have also switched compression fittings to some black EK's which are cheaper but in stock at least.

So hopefully stuff will arrive on Monday to get the build going.

Why is there only one rad?

1x 240 is not enough and spending all that money, change the case for the love of god!

Can't change case till funds allow end this month and another rad will also be added then. To be honest I have had enough of ordering stuff and finding it's out of stock.

Never had issues with my old 240 rad and cpu & gpu loop. Only on an old i7-920 at moment which never hit over 60 degree on last loop.

Changed order to suite earlier what in stock and now its on back order cause they screwed up!!! 4 weeks now this has taken so far.
