My thoughts on Vista RC2

Well I got the itch to give Vista RC2 a try on the new rig, so I've got it up and running along side of XP x64. As far as I can tell so far, Microsoft truely has a winner on their hands (which all really depends on the price). This go around it actually feels more like a new OS than merely just a reskin of XP. The user interface is pretty much gorgeous, it runs very fast, and the added features are very nice. Everything is well layed out easy to access, and the rearranged control panels, etc are easy to navigate.

Anyone who hasn't had a chance to give RC2 a shot definately should if they have an itch to give Vista a try. I'm giving it two thumbs up so far, no glitches, no crashes, very fast, and looks great.

Now, let's just hope that Microsoft figures out that it's not exactly worth whatever it is that they originally had planned on charging for Vista Ultimate (aren't they wanting to charging something absurd like $400+ for it???). It's definately not worth that, but I'd easily give $200 for it.

Anyone have any thoughts on RC2? I think we're nearing final release VERY soon.

Cheers mate! :wavey:

cant really try it on my rig as its only a p4 2.8 with 1gb of ram. cheap 128mb graphics.

I want the full experiance when i try it, so will wait till i build a new one.

only thing to stop me getting vista on its release is...its damn pricing!! expected to retail near £150 apparently

well this time around i might get a legal copy (first one since ME (yes yes i know i know.....BAD decision))

obviously i wont be a n00b and ill get OEM :D

Just a small update. Yesterday when I went to boot in to Vista it would get right to the OS where the mouse cursor would pop up and then crash/reboot/repeat the cycle. Pretty annoying. I popped in the Vista disc and tried to use the repair feature that they have on the disc (which actually looks like it might be pretty good for some thing) but it said that it couldn't fix my problem. Needless to say I had to format and reinstall. Don't know what the glitch was, but it sucked. Maybe still a few more bugs to work out :)

It seems to run a lot smoother (RC2 has tons of bugs, btw Frag, do you have AeroGlass working in RC2?). It looks pretty damn sweet ;). Also has some nifty bits like the changing volume icon and the scroll windows as shown in the other thread which are nice.

Frag, gloss aside - what do u get from Vista that u don`t from XP ?

Not much really, they just maximized the user friendliness quite a bit, and made it much easier on the eyes. There are a few little features that are nice, but I can't even think of them off the top of my head right now.

One thing that annoyed my with vista was the lack of permissions to the hard drive, registry etc, now that was a pain in the ****.

I have just tried to get Windows Vista RC2 but the Windows Live site only allows you to get RC1, Even direct links to RC2 just take you back to the microsoft live site which only allows RC1.

Downloading RC1 now anyway.

Vista RC2 was open to a limited number of users. I'm pretty sure you can use the RC1 key for RC2 if you can get the ISO, but a lot of people said RC1 was better than RC2.

Windo$e achillies is it`s reliance on the old style registry, doing away with it, even partially, would be a bonus imo (if that`s what u infer). Obviously they shouldn`t take away without something better to replace.

Be nice to see the registry (and even maybe the filesystem) as a database. Much quicker to access and search.

Yeah they dropped a lot of stuff out of it that I wish they would have gone through with. I was expecting a much lower-quality OS than what I have seen so far. I like it immensly.
