My first mod (N0rth3rn L1ght5)

Hey guys. I took an old case that was going to the dumpsters end decided to try and do something with cheap material. Only using rattle cans for the paint job, made some holes for a 240 rad in the bottom and some holes in the motherboard tray for cable management. I'm still waiting for the rubber panel to put in the holes I made and some dust filters for the bottom and sleeving the cables for the power and reset button.

I decided to call it northern lights even though it doesn't really resemble the northern lights very well.

I have no before pictures but some from the beginning.

Please be honest about what you think. I don't need "This is perfect" because I know it aint

I dont think it's that bad for a first attempt especially when you consider that a lot of people wouldn't even try in the frist place, so well done on this endeavor

This is perfect

If you post like that all the time youllbe getting asked to leave. Dont be an arse.

When painting the stripes you should have done it with the panels on so they lined up....

With that case polishing a turd does spring to mind though.... :/

I should have made the lines meet but polishing a turd. Would you take a cosmos 2 and ruin that beauty when you're doing your firs paint job and first modding?

Not like I'm going to be using it for anything other then practice...

Agree with tom on this one, think you should have taped it off for the paint with the panels on the case, then ran a razor along the tape at the panel joins so you can remove the panels and paint them all separately.

Other than that, it seems you've done a decent paint job, but on something that's almost not worth it if you know what i mean, unless you did a whole world of other mods i don't think id see it as a good case.

but then again im running a 6 year old case anyway

still considering modding it soon though im not sure i will

I was just trying out some paint on one of the sides and decided to do more and then more until this came out of it... I used black paint and fluoracent yellow straight into the wet black to make it look greenish. I have a lot of time and nothing to do all day as I am disabled so not a very high budget but a lot of fun just doing something and concidering I've only been interrested in computers for 8 months now I think I'm doing some progress... Had never heard of water cooling until last january...

It was only a joke

This, i have a 3 month holiday after finishing secondary school, was doing some dremeling the other day for another reasons, i need to mod something, but it won be publish worthy, as im not to great at it, i started building a test bench but im not sure i can be bothered

What should I have done better there?
smile.png
I'm just a noob to all this so any suggestions are well accepted...

its just awful, i suggest some car body filler, lots of dremeling, sanding, shaping, and im sure it could look good, would take a fair amount though

As you can see I'm not that good either so why not let others see?? Not everyone can be as perfect as Tom to begin with x)

A guy I know found it in the dumpsters with some parts in it and wanted me to check if it worked... Well if it had worked I wouldn't have wanted to use it ohh and I got a free spider with it...

On the opposite side from toms "polishing a turd" comment, I commend you for taking something older and middle of the road and doing everything you could to make it better... Sure the case isn't the best thing in the world but overall I think you did a good job, and improved the case greatly.

I would suggest painting the interior back panel just black leaving the stripes off. also if you felt like doing some cutting perhaps lose the funky grille things in the top and side. top replace with fan mountings and side with a slightly different shaped window.

looking good as is though mate

Thanks mate. I was using a dremel for the first time and it was really just trying to spend my time on something fun more then doing something cool. Trying out a dremel and painting with rattle cans and taking a case apart and putting it back together... Had fun and learned plenty of things in the process and made many many mistakes

Next time I will put some thought into it beforehand and maybe spend some money on it. Just used the cheapest things I could get for this "MOD"

I like the paint effects you created however the color choice was not the best. But like you said this was for practice and it is a good effort. You could experiment more on the design of the case, since you don't plan on using it it will not devastating if you ruin it and need to trash it. This looks like an all aluminium case, you would have to be careful because I know that Thermaltake did not use the best quality aluminium in their case designs.

If I want to try some real modding I need some money first. But you're right about the aluminum, it's really really crappy
