My first day back at college tomorrow!

I went through school and didn't do too well, kinda messed up my grades.

Did a year at college in construction then went to work in the building trade.

I had my introduction to the college last week with my class, although most have came straight from school and seem to mess around during lessons.

I'm hoping it will be a good experience for me though, i'm studying an IT Practitioners course which involves networking, programming, hardware installation, databases, etc. However i know quite a bit about this so i've asked to be monitored and be moved a year ahead if i'm finding it easy. :)

Anyone else starting college soon?

Hmm that seems to be a very broad course. Would this then allow you to go to uni or specilaise in one area?

I start a course in computer science at pompey uni on the 26th.

I start a course in computer science at pompey uni on the 26th.

It's a course for IT Technicians as they need to have knowledge of all aspects of computing.

NVQ Lv.2 - 1 Year

NVQ Lv.3 - 2 Years

Univeristy - 2-3 Years i presume.

Computer science, what does that involve? How a processor is made and things like that?

i did the it practitioners level 3 (networking, programming etc.) and now doing a HND at the local-ish college. the same as doing the first two years in computer science but £2000 cheaper on tuition fees and i can live at home.

can then top that up to a full degree with just one year at uni and then decide whether to carry on to a masters etc.

oh and the third year (at uni) is optional and can be used to get a full degree in most IT subjects (from science to animation)

Already done all that :). Believe me and don't be put off, it's a load of balls to be frank. We hardly even touched a computer, infact we were inside a computer twice. My course was full of girls and people who only joined because they had nothing else to do. Me and a few others were the only people who knew anything. The final year is a pain in the ASS as well. You will be doing a presentation infront of a camera and the class soon, about random stuff not related to the course.

The database was actually OK but the criteria made no sense, if you have to do it for Salchester Arms Hotel, say that Sally should do it herself because noone deserve all this pain as a student. They contradict themselves and the tasks are not clear. I had to redo my database many times.

The networking was non-existent and consisted off random questions about what a wireless access point was, there was NO networking or anything decent. The programming part of the course was.... wait for it... GAME MAKER, a crappy language made by some random company that has no values and is all scripts. I asked to use C++ or even some Java they refused and said it was too expensive for license ???? and other people are not capable of it. Well why would I go to college to do something I already know, college is for learning and expanding.

If you want some examples or get stuck PM me and I'll send you some examples I got given on some of the stuff lol. But you're not cheating, you won't need to LOL.

PS - Have fun and enjoy it, you will finish the course with around 2 months to spare, and one of the units consists of 4 in 1, and that's a short time period LOL.

basically - course was a lie, had nothing to do with IT, the questions were irrelevant, we was forced to do this ITQ crap which was about MICROSOFT WORD INSERTING TABLES. We did nothing that was described and the final product of your units DID NOT HAVE TO WORK. I don't even know why I did it tbh.

Other than that was good, the teachers were great and did have a laugh, the course material is rubbish and the only good thing is the book they give you. Oh and it was written by the teachers >.<.

i would go that far (if ur talking about lvl 3)

sure there were crap parts nothing like what they promised - got inside computers like once

networking was all theory

for our games we used visual basic and robotics with lego nxt was cool

its really not hard i got all distinctions literally by making use of "rework". do each assignment as soon as u get it

Exactly, the 2nd year was basically copy and paste from the first year. The robotics was soo annoying. The sensors were poor lol plus someone stole my little man :D.

Yes I was talking about level 3.
