Dunno if you guys remember Opus from the Amiga days but they're still around and going strong. The new version (9) works brilliantly with Vista and can be deployed to a USB stick too. One of the best apps you can buy for Windows and makes explorer look plain retarded tbh!

60 day trial available too. We've got 5 licences here at work already.. :)

There was a spiffy arse program I had for DOS that made file management a breeze. I can't remember for the life of me the name of the program however. It was nice because it allowed the use of the mouse with drag & drop.

hehe u need some screenies m8y.

I`ve just got the license to use 9, so I`m due to deploy it on Vista - one hell of an improvement to come.

I`ll upload a look for ya if I get a chance.

It makes even more sense on Vista as Opus is far better with UAC and is much (much) quicker than explorer.

does it properly replace explorer or does explorer still stay on the machine and you just use opus?

can it display normal icons like explorer?

i havent seen any screenies that show if it does:p

If by that do you mean it entirely replaces the shell - then no it doesn't (and with good reason: some windows (e.g. control panels) you'll actually want explorer for. On the other hand it _does_ replace explorer for normal file browsing so Windows + E opens opus for example. You can also double click the desktop for a new 'lister' and it integrates properly with the shell etc.

And no you don't have to have it running when not using it :)

Yes, you can dynamically flip between viewing modes (Opus has more than explorer) and it can learn the type of content your displaying too.

e.g. "Tiles mode"

Managing MP3s and Photos:

Or doing lots at the same time:

Here's what it looks like by default:

Or how about relative size:

It's insanely configurable too - here we see choosing icon sets for the fully customizable toolbars and buttons:

Backup and EXPORT the WHOLE program to USB (run without installation) WITH your configuration too:

tiles take up too much space,list/detail view is crap and ive never liked it even in explorer or any other veiwing format for that matter except simple icons lol...

Sigh.. OK here's a full list of 'view as..' (equivilent to explorer)

Extra Large Icons

Large Icons

Medium Icons

Small Icons

List

Details

Tiles

That enough 'icons' view modes for ya?

Tiles is aimed purely at people trying to use it as a photo manager, not for general file browsing. You don't have to use it (at all) ever - not even on Thursdays :D

You can combine each view mode with each of the layout modes:

Commander (two tree-less file lists)

Dual Horizontal (two trees with two detail panes - so like having two explorers on one screen)

Dual Vertical (as above but orientated vertically)

Explorer (make it look just like explorer)

Filmstrip (used for browsing pictures with a 'strip' of thumnails and a viewer pane)

Images (show everthing as tiled images - even folders which have four thumnails of the first files inside 'em)

Single (one commander-style pane, no tree)

Ok, that's pretty exhaustive - i'd suggest you try it if you want more info! As I said it's really configurable so you can get whatever view of files you want/need or even make it look just like explorer (but whhhhhhy?)

i will give it a go sometime then now i know it has icons:p

ive always used icons and most likely always will,an icon and filename is all i need;)

I`m not 100% sure, but I know I could import Amiga based icons, I`m almost sure I`ve seen a Mac icon pack somewhere.

Chances are u can change the icon set to a bunch of stuff, u`d have to hit the DOpus site/forums for more info.

Absolutely kains Vista`s awful explorer.

Oh and some1 asked is it just a replacement for explorer - well u can set it as a replacement, but u can use both side by side. (pffft like u`d want to)

I'm gonna hafta give this a go around when I get home today. Looks rather useful and the reviews are good.

I personally don't have a problem with Vista's Explorer, but anything that's better I'm all for.

I have started using instead of vista explorer today, the bit i like is the easy way of transfering files.

Its great :D
