Music Collection

Right, my windows media player seems to spaz out and die when i ask it to do anything with my music collection

even just scrolling through it is a task for it

the problem *might* be the quantity

there's 32,847 files

which makes a grand total of 109 gig

i wouldnt say my pc was slow, by any means

but it just cant deal with it

it crashes every time i try and do anything more than just selecting a track and playing it

system spec's are system 1 in my sig

running windows vista service pack one

any help is apreciated

p.s. i do not want winamp, i like wmp, cos it keeps my audio sorted out (when it isnt crashing, and recently, it hasnt been putting stuff into folders automatically, which i like it when it does..)

EDIT:

/me thinks someone is finding an excuse to show off his music collection. :p

That's alotta music right there.

As for the problem, I don't know what could be causing it. You could always try System Restore.

WMP is always a bit dodgy for me

Id happily use it..but it makes a horrible click when changing tracks and it hates loads of files

What about iTunes  (You probably thought of that anyway)

i had an ipod, and i sold it due to my undying hate of that badly written, craply-thought-out, stupid, useless piece of software

beside's, most of my music is windows lossless format WMA, and it wouldnt like that at all

i know it hates to load lots of files

does winamp correct ID3 tags and sort music out into folders?

no

therfore..

its out of the question

i'd love amarok, but it aint on windows yet

how about leaving WMP open for ages, it might be trying to read through all the files. You may find once it's done it the first time, it might be ok.

Winamp is FAAAAAAAAR more capable in every way than WMP, it can do pretty much anything with the right plugins and know-how

For large quantities of music iTunes is great, as is Foobar200 but you cannot load more than x amout of files in one go into the playlist, need to do it a couple thousand at a time.

Well, can't blame you for Blink. One of my favorite bands. :)

blink's great, as is green day, also like +44 and angels and airwaves...

think i just need to leave the pc on overnight with wmp open?`

I always find it best to leave lrg files and lrg amounts of files on an external drive rather than on the main windows drive. computer finds it easier to find sort and keep tidy. just a thought (and I know this is an old thread)

in my main pc, i have an 80 gig drive for windows/programs/quickly needed files

and a 500 gig for music/video's/pics etc...so ...

Foobar2000 is great...highly recommended

If not...VLC? Dunno how it does with music

dot, foobar2000 is the way to go IMO. :worship:

I don't have quite the collection as you, Ionicle - just shy of 40GB but foobar handles it no problem on my Media Center which isn't specced wonderfully either (Pentium D 805, 2x512MB DDR2, Vista X64).

Is that NickS??

Holy moly!

Haha, hey Kempez. Was talking to FragTek last week and he mentioned the place and how he "came back," and he said it would be cool if I stopped by and said whats up - so here I am :p.

I'm real out of the loop - I don't even have a desktop anymore. Just a laptop and a media center, but I s'pose I could stick around. No sense in not keeping up with the newest tech, it's still fun to read about. How have you and the rest of the team been? I see mostly everyones still around, but I see some new faces too, thats nice to see. You guys seem to be doing well, 'gratz!

Welcome matey, we're not too bad ta. Been doing good and good to see ya back :)

Am getting more into my AV now to be honest, must be getting old!

NickS! howdy :D

My music folder is only a shy 4GB atm, as I lost about 20GB when my HDD died :( So the 4GB is a old backup
