MSI Z97i AC & i5-5675C iGPU Issues

Hello,

My friend just built a brand new mini PC with an Intel processor that has the best iGPU:
Intel Core i5-5675C Processor with Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200

Reason why this, because he didn't want to use a dedicated GPU in his system.

Parts:
Motherboard: MSI Z97i AC
Processor: Intel Core i5-5675C
Memory: HyperX Savage 2 x 4 GB 1866MHz DDR3

Because the Motherboard BIOS didn't support Broadwell CPUs out of the box, so he used the Haswell CPU to update BIOS to the latest. So the BIOS update done, replaced the CPU and seated the brand new Broadwell chip.
Connected all the cables, hit Start and guess what... Monitor receiving no signal.
PC fans and stuff start up, but no display output from on-board iGPU - there was no problem with Haswell tho.
Also when adding a dedicated GPU all seems working fine, but he would like to get rid of the dedicated GPU from the PCIE...

Has anyone any idea why this is happening? How to resolve the issue?

With regards,
Mikkaav

To update to broadwell it actually requires a MUCH lower level update than just the 'normal' USB method.

You will probably find you have not gone through the correct process to get the microcode correctly updated.

Thanks for the quick response mr. TinyTom :)

I'm flattered that you personally reply to my issue.

What can I do? Re-update the BIOS using what if USB isn't good enough?
I've only done BIOS updated only with USB until this moment.

Would appreciate some instructions.

TIA
Mikkaav

Youll need to look on the MSI website. I had to follow some very specific guidelines to get Broadwell working on an Asus board and Id imagine it is the same for MSI seeing as it is an Intel issue not the vendors.

Thank you for the information, I appreciate it much!

I'll contact MSI and hope I get an answer as quickly as from this professional tech forum :)

*Fingers crossed*

Id just look on their website if I were you, the information will be in the support section where you downloaded the bios.

Yes dear friends, we have noticed all the MSI is writing on the product page.

We have updated the BIOS to latest 4.9 from USB using Haswell CPU because we need to see what we are doing (We need Display Signal)
When we finished BIOS Update everything seemed normal, we changed Haswell to Broadwell and BAM - No Display Signal
I wonder how am I supposed to install OS and stuff when I can see only black screen on the display... :D
And where do I install the Driver when I don't have an OS nor can I see anything :D

It's just crazy how bad the 5'th Gen support is...

Use Haswell again so you can get back into the OS. So then you can install the latest Intel VGA driver. Or you can use the VGA card as you mentioned the VGA card worked alongside Broadwell CPU. Update the driver and let me know.

This might need some time, because we don't have the Haswell chip anymore (borrowed it) and have no spare GPU neither at mo.

But ok, I get a GPU, seat it in PCIEx16, I install OS with all the Drivers and stuff including the latest Intel VGA Driver.
Then if we remove the Dedicated GPU and everything works fine, then this is until the next "Format C" :D
So I think this is not the real solution for this...
Also if I'm not mistaken, then the drivers will get loaded up during OS load...
So basically all PC systems are not running any drivers during POST nor surfing the BIOS...
Or am I just wrong?

You mentioned in your original post that Broadwell worked but only when you had a Graphics Card installed, correct? This means that Broadwell is working and the BIOS update was successful. The problem then lies with the iGPU on Broadwell or even the motherboards video-out ports.

If the above statement is correct then there are some things you can try:

  • Try all the video-out ports on the motherboard in case there is a fault with one of the ports, i.e. HDMI.
  • Reflash the BIOS again in case the BIOS got currupt in the update process.
  • If you said the Graphics Card works with Broadwell installed then perhaps in the BIOS it's defaulted to display the PCI-e x16 slot first. Go to the BIOS and make the default VGA is the iGPU and not display first from PCI-e.

Then there are other things to consider;

- Broadwell CPU may be faulty
- Motherboard video ports may be faulty

You can only really check if the CPU is faulty by trying another :( However you can test the motherboard video ports by using that Haswell CPU again to check if it's the motherboard to blame.

I don't think there is a firmware you need to install. During the Summer I ran the 5775C on the Z97 XPOWER just fine. All I needed was the BIOS to update like any other BIOS update.

probably a silly question. but did you change bios settings so it uses on board. then power off remove the pcie card, connect to the onboard and then power on?

Re-Flashed the BIOS v4.9 to 4.9 via DOS and now it's OK... It was a BIOS issue overall... Motherboard Display Out had to be working, because they worked with Haswell CPU. But yeah, now it's working, fresh Win 10 installed with all necessary drivers. Working good!

Funny man :D

Thanks for tips guys, I appreciate your effort in helping to solve this issue!
