Msi oc genie 2 unstable?!?!

HI Guys.
I picked up a 3570K recently after selling my 2500K to my bro. I didnt have time to overclock so I pressed oc genie on my z77A-GD65. Much later I started to notice that games would crash often on high settings.

After many nvidia driver updates/rollbacks I became unsettled, until I realised that the voltage of my cpu at stock was higher than the oc genie voltage. It was obvious then what was causing the problem. The oc genie overclock wasnt stable.

So has anyone else experienced this?

Strange, OC Genie usually overcompensates with voltage.

Still, there's only one way to overclock, and that's manually :)
Try 4.5GHz at 1.25v. EIST off, Turbo Boost off.
Use Intel Burn Test's Maximum preset for 10 runs and run CPUID HWMonitor to check your temps. If it's stable, work on getting the volts down 0.01v at a time, running IBT every time you change the settings. Or, bump the clock up 100MHz and test for stability.
As long as the max temps at the end of the IBT run were under 80-85*C, you're fine.

If you're still not confident in this, however, it may be worth reflashing the BIOS.

The above link shall download the latest BIOS from MSI's website. Unzip the file and place it on a USB thumb drive formatted to FAT-32. Enter your UEFI and go to the Utilities menu on the right hand side. Select M-Flash and find the BIOS file on your thumb drive. Flashing your BIOS will clear any settings you had saved.
After that, press the OC Genie button and see how it works for you.

Hope this has helped.

Thanks Josh, you're always on the ball. I dont want to keep using it of course as Ill do it properly when my razor gtx670 block arrives and all my watercooling is ready.

As you said automatic oc's usually over compensate, like my last asus board, but Id like to know why MSI release a board that has an unstable overclock. I assumed it would be perfectly stable off the mark.

Could just be a minor BIOS bug, fixed with the latest version. There are many things that can be fixed with a BIOS flash :)
It should be said that I've never had an issue with the stability of an OC Genie overclock when I've tried it.
Is it possible that you saved a profile for OC Genie to work from?
