MSI HydroGen GTX 480 Leaked

One in work, overclocked mildly (I just had to), idles @ 42, 72 @ full load (on air). That's one hot gpu. Certainly the original ones with the sh1te cooler and out of date bios run hotter.

Not sure if the use of the word "leaked" when discussing a watercooled block is wise

With the extortionate extra cash they usually add onto the waterblock versions of cards over the years - do these have any kind of extended warranty or warranty that's different to a standard card ?

Otherwize it's stockcard+block+labor-fittingfearfactor.

I'm not sure. I know with a few manufacturers today I need to register my details in the US as anywhere outside the US the warranties are "limited".

Eeeeyup.

I read a review roundup in Custom PC a couple of months back and that's exactly what it is. Some come OC some not.

It's cheaper to buy card + Danger Den = better cooler and you save about £70.

Doing it yourself is always cheaper. That's why we build PCs and don't go to PC World. But if you have a stock card and swap the cooler you're instantly voiding the warranty, plus any arse-twitching if you haven't done it before.

That extra few notes for a warrantied one, plus MSIs RMA service is epic, is more than worth it for a lot of people.

Otherwise we could argue that grabbing a chunk of copper and borrowing a CNC is cheaper lol.

I'll just nip out back and fire up my mill

Yeah you have a good point. Thing is though these cards are aimed at serious enthusiasts who are prepared to let water flow around their pcs in pipes.

Mind you, I suppose it saves time and for those kinds of prices money certainly shouldn't be an object really.

Everything hand built - Tom got me hooked on W/Cing and never looked back.

Never owned a pre cooled item. its good to get down and dirty with water and once you start you rarely ever go back on air.

my first attempt looked like this, spaghetti junction!!

I really done know what's all the fuss and spending extra dough is about I just plug in my headphones and play on and my two 480's can make all the noise they want I played for six hours yesterday and everything maxed out and my 480's were 90c and nothing happened it seems like the 480 can tolerate high temps for hours without any problem so can any sensible person tell me why would I spend loads of cash on water blocks when everything is fine on air. Guys you buy your graphic cards to play games which are full of explosions and bangs and loud noises so why do you expect you graphic card to be quiet it seems stupid (ohh I'm playing Crysis and there's explosions everywhere but my GPU is less than 20 DB) ridiculous... it's like firing a shotgun (pumpaction) without any noise to be honest I'll never fall in the trap of water cooling because all you are doing is giving your money to an industry which shouldn't exist.

note - "the use of headphones"

I hate, nay despise the use of headphones and I also hate fan noise. my 280 is currently back on air and I cant stand the fan noise, yes there are perfectly good aftermarket coolers to drop temps therefore reducing fan noise but when every thing's under water the only faint noise I get is the odd click of a HDD and a almost indistinguishable faint pump whirr.

One of my daughters uses hearing aids and cant use headphones, any background noise picks up such as fan noise and spoils her enjoyment of hearing the games she plays, therefore I have her rig water cooled too. OK she doesn't play Crysis. ( her rig isn't powerful enough - much to her disgust

Negativity or trying to understand why a "sensible" person does something needs to be approached with an open mind. Could go down the old life choice route here.

I don't see anyone saying, you, as an individual should go to water or why your daft to stay with air. Air suits you, good man.

Personal preference is a strong emotion and to state the industry shouldn't exist is a bit blasé. The industry exists as people have a choice / passion and therefore the industry has grown to support those and provide products to allow them to fulfil their goals.

There are arguments to support - but Im not going to provide this data as I don't have it - that keeping components cool improves their longevity. Just another avenue to consider.

All this and i do consider myself to be sensible - 3kids/2 rabbits /2 cats and a snake makes that statement a lie but there you go

Threads kind of deviating from the product its about but is good to see constructive debates about anything.

Mate I've been a sales person since I was 17 I can sell sand to the Arabs and I know how the game works companies make their profit with the add-ons and this is why more GPU's are coming with water blocks and fancy guarantees it's were the big money is made so I'm trying to alert the guys not to fall for that trap the 480 is expensive enough as it comes and paying a extra 70-100 £ over that in my opinion is not sensible but everybody is free to spend their cash as they please. I truly believe air is the best solution but the way the industry is going (in my opinion) is crazy next we will have water blocks for the hard drives (don't be surprised) as long as there is money making they will try and sell it to you believe me friends because I have this conversation every morning in my staff briefing.
