Mr.idiots pc set up :)

It isn't necessarily idiotic.

But the guy has very good common sense using the internet so he doesn't necessarily need one.

He should stick to at least AVG though eh?

True,

I dont no tho some people dont no much when it comes 2 computers n the internet but the way he gos on there in that post makes me laugh,

Like if he nos that popups can do stuff 2 his p.c. why surf the net with no firewall.

There is a kinda generation who've almost grown up with the net and had it for ages, that can do very well without any av or firewall software.

On one of my own pcs I could do all that he says he does without any qualms. However if it's a pc I know there's a chance some1 else might use, I'll put something minimal on it.

Threats and so forth are rethought through time depending on how many issues u have. If u have nothing for years u can be forgiven for having no protection at all.

Even in my own case, leaving the standard OS safeguards in place and upd8ing them is enough, it's all about knowing sites to go to and emails to open.

I my self use avg 8s linkscaner for keeping away from dodgy websites n links,

it comes up green in a box when its good n a red box when its a dodgy one.

From what i see on must boades people dont no how a firewall works let alone

What it doz,

As for e.mails i just use a webmail site that way iff any unwanted e.mails pop up in my mail box its not landing on my p.c. just on there webmail site instend,

Whilst I do have avast and a firewall running, I haven't been attacked for almost two years. That only happened because I accidently left sharing folders open whilst in the uni library.

I think it's a case of not being a fcuk wit and going on obvious BS sites, or not scanning anything you download.

lol what a idiot, but i was reading down the thread and i found this:

im running a over clocked 3.8 nearly reaching 4.1 ghz with two water pumps.

no firewall

no virus protection

no scanners

no microsoft protection ****.

not even microsoft patches.

People get the virus thing mixed up, you don't need to actually download anything to be infected. Viruses come in MANY forms, some scripts, some applications. I could probably create a script to auto download via active x, therefore allowing me to alter settings. I had to create a basic virus for school :D.

Visiting websites with FLASH, ACTIVEX, and any other plugins causes troubles. Emails are also a bad form of contracting viruses.

It's like safe sex, you don't want to go unproteced with someone you don't know, or know for that matter. There is a 50/50% chance of getting something, you always need to be protected.

Its all in how you use the internet. Just becasue you dont use a firewall, antivirus, ect and do your card online dosent mean anything. Most routers have a built in firewall that most people dont know is there. I dont run anything and ive never had any problems before.

I don't really use antivirus software, I do have AVG but I'm not sure if/when it runs. I just use Vista's built-in firewall. If you're smart with how you use the web, you shouldn't need a bunch of tools.

Common sense is the best tool against spyware....
