Mobile G80 Ready for Santa Rosa Launch

Nvidia is apparently readying its GeForce 8 mobile graphics processors with DirectX 10 support for the next-generation Intel Centrino Pro mobile platforms. It'll be certainly interesting to see how the mobile variants of the 8800 series cards impact on battery life in a laptop. Care to comment? Feel free to do so below...

Some news...

Looks good.

Anyone care to comment on wether or not these G80s might be available on smaller screensizes (such as 12" to 15")? Are graphic processors this fast usually too big to fit into lappys this size?

With admiration

But is it even possible to fit them into that small laptops? Wouldn't that require taking out the harddrive or something?

And thanks for the promt answer.

umm no wtf?

They'll just be a normal add-in GPU board for a laptop adapted for smaller form factor and lower power consumption

The GPU itself is the same size as current mobile GPU's found in laptops. Nothing different really. We may not see 640mb or 768mb of memory, but 512mb sounds feasible in the high end gaming lappys.

Oh. I might not have made myself very clear. I thought the really high end GPUs available today are too big to fit into anything but 17" and 19" laptops. Is this a false assumption then?

With anticipation

mobile G80 - beats paying to get the snip rofl:rollingla

i can only imagine how much heat theses things would put out in a lappy.

cheers.

Yes is the answer. If nVidia are making a mobile one I don't suppose they'll make it so it can't fit into smaller laptops, though I very much doubt you'll see one in ultra-thin and lightweight use lappy's. Most of these powerful GPU's are put into what are known as "Desktop replacements"

Cool...

That is really good news Kempez. Some dude at a laptop building company told me that the really high-end GPUs that exist today are impossible to fit into small screensizes. But I trust you way more than him.

Thanks - I guess I'll be waiting a couple of months then before bying my new tiny & extreme lappy.

(Oblivion, Assasins Creed, Mass Effect - watch out.)

I might stop in with a couple of more questions if I think of any.

Keep cool like the flip side of the pillow.

The reason you won't see a G80 in an ultra-portable laptop is for a few reasons... The first reason being they are trying to keep the lappy as light as possible, hence you always see them with integrated gfx. Another reason is that I don't actually know anyone that would buy a 12" screened lappy for gaming, it would be a horrible experience. The high-end GPU's also produce a LOT of heat and need a proper cooling solution which usually can only be found in the larger gaming lappies because they provide adequate space for a good heatsink.

Yeah like I said: Ultra-Slims won't have high-end GPU's...but I see no reason why the 15.1" 1680 x 1050's wouldn't have a G80.

Plus DX10 lappy's will start having the lower/mid range cards in them when they're brought out

You said it.

I know what you mean but my plan is to get a lappy as small as possible (being a guy on the run) that can still work as the ultimate gaming rig when hooked up with an external screen (a not so horrible experience I hope...).

This actually makes me think of another Q for you wizdudes:

Can one experience any performance drops or complications when using a lappy together with a bigger (separate) screen?

Feel free to move my question if this is getting off topic.

With best intentions
