Mix SATA and IDE?

Yes it is :)

Not much more to say really... except you need to have a motherboard which supports both of course.

Another consideration may be which drive to install your OS on. I found my 500GB Samsung Spinpoint T133 SATA drive was 10mb/s faster on a sequential read than my 250GB Samsung PATA drive, so I installed my OS into a 60GB partition on the SATA drive.

The 500GB drive also has a larger cache and SATA has a faster maximum theoretical bus speed, so the 500GB drive performs faster when reading from cache and therefore in many other types of speed test.

If you really want performance though a 10,000 RPM WD Raptor (SATA) drive with a 16mb cache is the way to go, or rather 2 of them running in RAID0. Or, a solid state flash drive ;)

I can honestly say that they really are not worth the money. If you want speed go for 2 smallish drives raid, it'll cos you 1/2 as much for twice the space.

Yeah, I probably agree with that conclusion. You get some performance improvement with raptors but it may not be enough to justify the cost.

That said...

A friend of my fathers uses raptors in RAID0 for his gaming PC, which he takes to LAN events etc. It's a small cube PC so it only has space for 2 drives so when he went overseas with it and needed more storage space he had to remove the RAID and install a single raptor (on which he installed windows) and a bigger hdd for storage. He said he really noticed the difference in boot times and responsiveness in windows.
