Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP

Quote

''If a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background.

Another new feature of the alert system is to put the PC into "persistent desktop notification" mode, with a banner at the bottom of the screen informing the user that the copy of Windows is not genuine. The notification is translucent and users can interact with any objects underneath it; however, it will continue to appear on the screen until a user installs a genuine copy of Windows.''

so it will just turn you background to black and put a watermark saying your naughty. I would have thought MS would corrupt the OS!

I'd reckon it depends on the method you use to "activate" the illegally aquired version of XP, pretty sure a BIOS emulation tool will still get around it though.

I though that if you used a keygen etc you were home free, unless the key is reused some place else?

This wont effect anybody using a corporate version that dosent require activation. And as far as i know Windows Update dosent use their WGA so this is just pretty retarded.

It`d take a few hours and possibly some cans of mountain dew, for an exe to come out that`d stop it.

These things cause little blips I`m sure, but on the overall skeme of things, if ur being paid 6 figures to come up with such futile things, ur an absolute legend in the pc world - and I think ur worth every penny simply for getting some1 to pay u to do it.

Lol somebody just admitted to having pirated XP

I HAVE A PIRATED, BOOTLEGGED, FAKE XP PRO Windows =]. Give me all you got microsoft...

Yea man what can i say, okay good there trying to stop people from using pirated XP, but no point man we'll always get around it.

microsoft should have figured it out, that there's no point to it. Why don't they just realize it, and use their resources on something else? Logic is apparently rare nowadays.

Before Kemp or similiar sees this thread - keep it legal or face thread closure/editing

That means no discussion of methods to crack protection etc.

But yeh, if i were using a cracked version i wouldnt be too worried tbh, it doesnt do much and even then, if its as protected as vista for pirated versions...its still fairly easy.

Wonder how secure Windows 7 will be for this kinda thing?

Thanks guys. The offending posts have been removed and I'm trusting that this thread will remain within the confines of the forum rules.

I run a legal copy as it came with my laptop. Funny thing is, i already have a black background and a banner at the bottom wouldn't really bother me anyway. Well at least not until someone posted a fix.

I agree, the team in charge of this must be laughing. Man they’ve got a good job. I reckon the next one will force a screensaver on you with a "My copy of XP isn't genuine" ribbon scroll.

@Mrapoc: i hear they will have blood based DNA scanning on windows 7, one copy per person with a 5 second refresh.

Seriously though, if they use either of those ideas I’m suing. maybe i should put a little (C) after them.
